if you dont install the gui and minimize the packages you can run it on a 486
How about you give us the specs you have to work with, and we tell you how it will run.
I have it running currently on a 400 mhz celeron |

i was a huge fan of Suse until i got sick and tired of Yast. Ubuntu is alright i like the whole thing built around apt-get and such.
My biggest pet peeve is it seem every distro likes to put stuff in different places which can be a pain in the butt. I suggest you play with several distros till you find the one that fits you. I dont use linux a whole lot, i just remote into the machine from work so i can do stuff at home and create a tunnel. Other than that i dont use it for anything else. |

I believe Ubuntu is the best balance between "power" (a word I believe is severely misused, and overused) for programming, compiling from source, etc. and interface (provided you install the GUI). I have successfully run full installs of Ubuntu,Kubuntu, and SuSE on an old DELL OPTIPLEX 450. It's not speedy per se, but it can be done successfully. You'd definitely be fine with an old 1GHz machine and 256MB.
Just my 2˘

If you're looking for the "best" implementation of KDE, I'd say SuSE currently has the best implementation. Of course that could change any minute. However, if you really want a version of Ubuntu and want KDE, then Kubuntu is the way to go. |
