I was playing around with Ubuntu (6.10) but was told that Dapper (6.06) is more suited for beginners.
Its amazingly easy to install, just like Windows, and now I have a dual boot system with both Windows XP and Ubuntu on my laptop, and it did everything automatically (freed up some space from my windows partition, made an ubuntu partition, created a swap partition). |

If suggest you dont customize partitions (not recommended for begginers) let Ubunutu make the partitions automatically, just leave unpartitioned space in the harddisk for the install and it will allocate them automatically, mostly it makes 2 partitions one for file system and a second one that usually is the double of your ram for scratch disk.
Lets say you have a 80 gig harddrive and want to dual boot..
You partition for windows at 40 gig and left the other 40 unpartioned, ubuntu will pick the other 40 and make the partitions and will create a boot menu so you can choose what os to start. |

5 gig for a Linux install? I'd use ext3 or Reiserfs. I'd also recommend a larger partition than 5 gig next time.

if its 80 gig harddisk, the rest of the space will be ok to install Kubuntu, just let it install on the raw part, select that disk and it will tell you it has XX space free to allocate linux. |

| then why bother with the install just play around with it from the live cd, that was part of the point in using a live cd...there is no need to install anything!

OK......toclear this up....yes i know i can just run off the live cd......but i want to install it so i can mess around with it.....diff stuff on it.....etc etc.....and not have ot have it lag.....
Now for the installation......like i said......when i installed WINDOWS 2 weeks ago....u kno that partition thingy.....i told it to make my C partition of 70 gigs.....and the last 5 were left RAW......now when i do the linux installation.....when i choose anything else it'll use my C partition therefore i have to use the custom partitioner and tell it to use the RAW......and tell it in what way to partition it.....EXT3.......EXT2.....FAT16.....FAT32.....NTF s.....or what (more ways of partitioning then that too....) got it?
Thanks |
