    Fedora Core delema

Hello, everyone. Here's my hardware setup for the Linux rig of the month.

    Athlon XP 2100+
    512Mb DDR333 (single channel)
    Epox 8RDA+
D-Link Ethernet (the onbaord network is disabled)
    nVidia FX5200
    Mad Dog 16x DVDROM
    Antec TruePower 430w
    DPT PM1564U3 PCI SCSI controller
    2x Seagate Cheethah 68-pin U160 in RAID0
    Currently running Fedora Core 3

    The problems:

    1) When I run the update utility in Fedora, I get an error saying the update host (?) is not found.
    2) I visit a chat room that runs in Java, but I can't log in. Says to 'click here for plug-in', but when I do, it says 'no suitable plug-in found'.
    3) Would LOVE to get Fedora Core 6 installed, (plan to do a fresh install), but Anaconda cannot find my SCSI disks >< (here we go again!!!) .

    My questions are:

    1) How can I get Java to run in Fedora Core 3 and update FC3, OR
    2) How can I get Fedora Core 6 up and running on the rig?

I've been looking all over online for about an hour for this prob with FC6. I'm not alone by a long shot, but haven't found any resolutions, either. I also tried using a lone, non-RAID, drive for the install and it was not found, either. I can see the i20 being loaded during boot, but I'm guessing either it's not correct or somehow corrupted. I got the ISOs used to make the FC6 disks from FC's official site, so I'm fairly certain they are current.

please, can someone help me with this? I really like the FC3 on it now, but the Java is real important. If I can't get it to work in Fedora, I'll have to try another distro all together.

Do the instructions here for core 6 not work for core 3?

(this is the first result I got searching for "java fedora core" so I'm guessing you've seen it already)

Either I'm doing it wrong, or it doesn't work, GameMank. I don't think yum is in FC3.

I followed the instructuions, but it says that the directory redhat/SOURCES does not exist.

What browser are you using to visit the chatroom in? Did it come with the distro or did you install it separately? If it's the latter, then you may need to manually install the flash plugin into the browser. Otherwise, installing the java rpm should work.

if it's a gecko-based browser (mozilla, firefox, etc) then you can type
    Code:
    about:plugins
to see if it's loaded or not.

I'll check the plug in thing later. I have an appointment to get to now.

The browser is mozilla, yes, and it was included with FC3.

If the plugin is loaded, then most likely it's an old version of flash and the site needs a newer one.

BTW, you type the about plugins thing into the address bar, sorry if that wasn't clear before.

OK, I'm looking at about : plugins now and the only one I see is RealPlayer.

There's this to: libnullplugin.so , it says it's some default plugin, but it's 'no' under the 'enabled' column.

Those are the only two things listed under "Installed Plugins"

I'm gonna look around some more for FC3-Java crap.

Thanks for the help so far, I thik you all will get 'er working.

Yeah, java is not installed then. You just need to install it. You can go to sun's page at http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp to download it. I think they have rpm's available. You'll only need the Java runtime environment (JRE).

OK, now I'm frustrated. (lol. imagine that? :P)

I downloaded and installed the package in the link. I used the RPM, self-extracting one, followed the instructions, ant it installed.

However.....(jfc)....it's still not in mozilla and I can't get into the web site ><

I checked about : plugins after and it's not listed. there's no change in anything listed in the about section.....

I can see a file, (accessable only as root), but it says the package is already installed.................I'm trying to be patient, but it's things like this that cause me to periodicly give up on Linux.

I'm still looking for support from Fedora Core's tech site on the SCSI thing, but nothing going on....

Is there something more i need to do to get java running in mozilla other than installing it? I used the installation instructions to the letter, but nothing ><

To get the plugin showing up you'll need to make a symlink from the actual plugin file to the mozilla plugin directory. I don't remember where the rpm installs java and I don't remember where FC puts the plugin dir so I can't give you the exact command to use.

When I extracted it, I changed the directory from where it was D/L'd too. This is what the two commands looked like:

    chmod a+x jre-6-linux-i586-rpm.bin
    ./ jre-6-linux-i586-rpm.bin

If that helps tell you where it went.....

try a "whereis java", that might help. You'll probably have to do a little searching in the java directory once you find it, but it should be in there.
