Which Linux ?
Hey guys; I want to download Linux to use occasionally.
I want a easy to load, Dual bookable with vista edition
I want to use XGL on it.
I want it to be easy if possible
I want it to load fast. I mean Fast. I would Like to have my pc turn on much faster than xp.
Any suggestions on which version to get. I want it to be free if possible but willing to pay like $25 for it. Also Where.
Help me get started. I know that I will be hooked.
I probably might use Linux for web surfing if it is faster.
thanks in advanceMSI K8N Neo4 Platinum / A64X2 4800+ Toledo(Stock)

Milwaukee you have no idea what you are talking about he's not talking about live cd's!! he's planning on dual booting
gentoo, ubuntu and suse {would be my recommendation} are all pretty easy to use, at least I didn't find them that hard as a newb and all work with xgl. As for loads times I don't know didn't compare them that much.Last edited by RicheemxX; February 11th, 2007 at 12:13 AM.

Linux is not made to boot up fast.
Its made to boot up once and very rarely go down again.
whereas windows was made to reboot very quickly
Linux is SLOW to boot up.. if you clean up services it helps, but still not fastHelicopters don't fly; they vibrate so much and make so much noise that the earth rejects them.

To have a *nix that loads fast would mean turning off lots of services. There are distros that load fast but they would be no good for gaming as they don't load many drivers at all.
Once it's loaded *nix does tend to load apps faster than windows, due to the way apps work with the OS. But don't expect a desktop disto like Ubuntu or Suse to load as fast as Vista at startup....
Trying them is the best way. After all, you don't have to pay anything to test them out...
Cheers

I just revisited Linux again recently for SMP (dual core) processors.
If you are considering 64 bit Vista, then I would reccommend Kubuntu. Otherwise DL the appropriate version for your dual boot scenario.
Enough to get you started. As far as XGL, etc, you may have to add the package after the install.
Here's how I started:

If you want 3d desktop out of the box, you might want to try Sabayon. I haven't tried it, but I've heard good things. It's based on Gentoo.
What video card do you have? edit: oh looked at your sig, that should work nicely.
I also recommend ubuntu or kubuntu, but you'll need to do a how-to to get the 3d desktop going.
DallasDon: I'm sure you had fun with the digital camera, but next time you might want to try using ksnapshot (hitting print screen)

A friend also recommended Suse. I guess what it is driving me is the different looks and way of Windows. I want a system that is better made really, the Xgl really realed me in. I can install XGL later should not be a issue. any good sources for suse? PS i need drivers for nvidia and other major parts for my PC. Im sure that suse should have a lot of drivers available, right?

Drivers for everything except nvidia come in the kernel for most distributions, so you don't have to install anything.
To install nvidia driver on ubuntu: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Bi...erHowto/Nvidia (basically comes down to installing the nvidia-glx package and running 1 command)
You can find similar instructions for SUSE or other major distros by searching.Athlon 64 x2 3800+/2gb/asrock 939dual-sata2/gf6200/audigy2 zs plat/sonata + Asus V6J + Lenovo Ideapad U330

Why 10.0 and not suse 10.2? I don't think 10.0 has xgl, they put it in in 10.1.

I have never installed SUSE, but it should detect that you have windows installed and add that to the boot loader menu. Hopefully that works with Vista, but since it's new, I don't know for sure.Last edited by GameManK; February 12th, 2007 at 01:52 AM.

I took about 50 of them in two seconds. I have no idea where they went, what file format, and have no clue how to move them over to the Windows partition so I can edit and post them on my website.
I really want to learn more with Kubuntu, I think I'll enjoy it more than Windows. And you certianly can't beat the price.
Not to worry, though. We are all born nothing but babies, everything after that is learned.

if your looking to download any distribution whether it be openSuSe, Mandriva, Ubuntu, etc.. check out my post above and go to DistroWatch, they will have all the current versions of a distro and the main packages they have so you can compare and contrast.. as well as be redirected to either a mirror or the distro's site to download it

This is the distro I use and recommend, Why because it works right out of the box. No need to configure Everything, everything just works. It also comes as a 1 CD install that is a live CD that you can install later if you wish.
