when installing ubuntu 6.06 onto my computer, i get to the message that says "uncompressing linux....ok, booting the kernel". and there it just stays.
i tried an older version i had, which was 5.10. when it gets to the third part of the setup process, which is to detect and mount cd-rom, i get the following error message:
"No common CD-ROM drive was detected.
You may need to load additional CD-ROM drivers from a driver floppy.
If you have such a floppy available now, put it in the drive, and continue. Otherwise, you will be given the option to manually select CD-ROM modules.
Load CD-ROM drivers from a driver floppy? (Yes/No)"
When i hit "no", i get the following message:
"Your CD-ROM drive may be an old mitsumi or another non-IDE, non-SCSI CD-ROM drive. In that case you should choose which module to load and the device to use. If you don't know which module and device are needed, look for some documentation or try a network installation instead of a CD-ROM installation.
Manually select a CD-ROM module and device? (Yes/No)"
When i hit yes, i get a selection of different modules to choose from:
none
aztcd
cdrom
cdu31a
cm206
gscd
isp16
mcdx
optcd
sbpcd
sjcd
sonycd535
of course, the only reasonable option here that i know of is cdrom.
i have a very new lg super multi dvd burner that has never had a problem in windows. it works completely, and i've even had it working with linux previously. the ide cable is plugged in properly and it is gettin power without a problem. i though maybe it was my boot order so i changed it from 1. floppy 2. LS120 3. hdd 4. cdrom - to 1. cdrom 2. hdd 3. none (i don't have a floppy drive) but i still received the same error. what could it possibly be? i never expected to see such an error. any help would be appreciated. thanks in advance. |

hmm..
I guess you could try 6.10 or another distro
The alternate cd might help, though I doubt it.
edit: there's really no need to bump your thread after 2 hours

ok so i decided to give a newer version a go. i tried ubuntu 6.10, and low and behold it worked. there must have been a problem with the older versions of linux i was attempting to install.
so i now have 6.10 installed with xp dual boot. partitions worked great, had no problems with the grub boot loader (one of my nightmares from past attempts :P)..trouble is, i now cannot seem to get my adsl modem to work. i'm very new to linux, and in the past, the internet has just seemed to work for me. but i have a new modem now and i can't get connected. the model is the siemens speedstream 6520 4 port wireless router. from the small amount of research i have done, i have a suspicion it may be a problem with my motherboard's ethernet. any help would be appreciated. thanks. |

correct. after some research, i have discovered that version 6.10 of ubuntu uses a sky2 kernel or something, and that it doesn't seem to like the marvell yukon ethernet controller integrated in my motherboard. the earlier version of this distro (6.10) had no such problems i believe.
i think at this stage there is a workaround, but it would require some alterations to the kernel. as i am new to linux, i don't think that messing around with such things is really worth it. however, there is no reason why i can't try other distros and versions of the same one.
as previously stated, 5.10 and 6.06 didn't work on my computer, however after discussing this with a friend today, i think maybe the disc that had 6.06 was scratched and i may try the same version on a new cd. failing that, i will consider what other distros may be a possibility at this stage.
thanks,
ryan |
