    Hey, Linux guys!

Trying to install Mandrake 6.5 on a Microsoft Virtual PC.

I'm at the "Making ext2 filesystem on /dev/hda1..."

It's been about 20 minutes and I"m not seeing HD light....think it's stuck?

Also, on a 16 meg virtual drive, how should I divvy up the root and swap partitions size-wise?

    Thanks!!

swap should be double the size of your memory usually and then the root will keep the rest of your data.. Mandrake, wow why not do Mandriva or something later than 6.5? Ohh btw, what are the system specs your putting it on... (i know its a virtual PC, what are your settings in there too)

    Yes...I just want a Linux console...No X apps at all...just Linux and C++ tools.

What about setting up a /home and /usr; I'm not doing that?

16 megs is way way way to small. Try at least a gig.

You don't need a /home or /usr. swap and / are all you need, technically speaking.

I hope you're being sarcastic Shucky...

well, I maxed out virtual HD size...130,000 meg should be 1.3 gig hd...gave it 512 memory. I'm letting it run...maybe it takes a frakn' hour to format a virtual hd.

Anyone know if Knoppix will give the C/C++ compiler? That would work as well

im pretty sure Knoppix has one off of their Live CD that all you have to do is boot to

    http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=knoppix

it looks like pretty much all versions have it

I had to give up on it...completely unstable on MS Virtural PC.

I know Linux runs good on other Vitrual PC products, but they cost money

VMWare has a free VMWare server and player here. You can use their server to create your own VM or use their player and a pre-configured image. Also, I curious as to why you are using Mandrake 6.5 and not a newer version or something like damnsmalllinux or Slackware if all you need is a console?

Becuase I had it laying around the house...Redhat 5.2 also. All I wanted was a console and the C++ compiler.

Do you know if I use Knoppix on a bootable CD, that I can mount and save to a floppy drive? That would serve my purpose as welll.

Thanks too for the heads-up on VMWare; I'll check it out!
