Ubuntu Studio & Beryl - Have to try!
I recently decided to try Ubuntu again.. and installed Ubuntu Studio. In the past, I tried millions of different distributions and always ended up making my way back to Windows XP. I got frustrated that I couldn't find software I wanted or it was just ugly.. But, I have to tell you that using Beryl to play with the display effects and Innotek's Virtual Box to run Windows XP if I need to really made all the difference. You should all check it out... it's definitley worth it. There are some things I would recommend, which I mentioned here.
Have you tried it? Would you?

I can see where some of the effects could be done without, but the desktop cube is awesome for anyone who uses several applications at once. I usually have my internet browser and downloads on one, while I'm editing photos full screen on another side of the cube.. while the other two may have my IMs, email or XP running. It makes it much easier to multi-task and get work done, IMO.

agreed. I run 7.04 on both my desktop and laptop as my main OS (and run XP pro on vmware for programming for school within ubuntu). never installed it on my laptop, but played with it on my desktop for a few days, it was cool for a while, until I just got used to it all. then the ol' apt-get remove.
As for the cube being more productive, you already have multiple desktops built into your desktop environment, thats just a fancy way to switch between them, so cant see how that would up productivity."There are only 10 kinds of people in the world, those that can read binary, and those that cannot."

i tried Studio when it first came out, but I had it on an older box, which wasnt doing me very well, so its about time I give it a good effort and also try out beryl
I have been much like you with my pursuit of linux distros, ive tried many but still seem to use Windows XP most of the time, although i do have a lappy that dualboots between Slack 9 and Windows
Here is the thread i started ooh so long ago when Ubuntu just released studio

As Battle mentioned, you don't need Beryl to take advantage of the multiple desktops... but hey, if you're going to do it.. you might as well have it look good!!
I stuck with Ubuntu Studio.. I'm still using it regularly, dual booting XP of course.

if i use studio, i will either dual boot with the PC in my sig or on another box I have (P4 2.8ghz, 512DDR, AGP 5200FX) which would work, but then again I would have to bring another box into my room and that would crank up the heat..
this isnt the time of year to be making toasters

hey thanks Trendy for recommending Ubuntu Studio, i decided to give it another whirl on my laptop that I travel with.. its actually rather nice but the one thing that I need to do which i cant figure out how is to edit GRUB's boot loader since I dual-booted with my pre-existing version of XP it run with it, but defaults to Ubuntu if i dont hit any key, I want to be able to edit that and have been unsucessful poking around in here so far. I want to have it boot the the Windows XP Pro partition as a default after 10 or so seconds, but i may want to change that back to the way it is now..
Anyone know how?

There's about 6 different ways to restore grub in that thread. That's all you have to do . Grub will pick up your xp partition, and add it automatically.

correct me if I'm wrong, but isnt it just safe to edit your /boot/grub/menu.lst file and change the boot order in there. Although not sure about adjusting the default time though.

Yes, you can edit both your boot order and the time by opening menu.lst.. which you can do by opening a terminal and typing:
And this will give you step by step instructions to make changes: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...time+grub+bootgksudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
