Ubuntu with VISTA on a Laptop ?

Gateway Turion Vista Premium Lappy.

Understnd that Vista allows the hard driveto be partition through Windows --is that true?

What kinds of problems should I expect if I dual boot a laptop.

Why Linux on a Lappy ??

Ubuntu..well time to learn LINUX and nice to spend time in a Cafe..and less demands on resources. Vista too much of a Hogge for a Laptop.

problems ? Wifi ??...Sound ?? (don't care)...others ?
very basic drivers or more than adequate?

Need to go searching for drivers ...or just on the Install Disc ?

yes, major benefit...try out Live and install if OK !

And Mandriva ?

Musta answered my own question by noting the "live disc" quality of many Linux proggies.

Anybody dual-boot Win and Linux on a lappy ? Or just going "live" mode...

I dual booted for a little while then got into VMWare and ran Linux in a VM under Windows.

Should have done it the other way around. My friend did that and Windows uses a lot less resources in a VM then when it's installed on a system directly. Probably because there's less system devices for Windows to install drivers for.

Once I get a better system, I'll probably do that again.

I honestly don't even see the sense of running VISTA on a Laptop anyway.
If you want Windows --or need it -on your laptop, stick with XP.

Vista is just too much of a resource hog.
I gig of memory is plenty for XP and 2 Gigs is great.

but not for Vista.
One gig is just getting by --even with a laptop install- and two gigs is not a monster memory.

So even if you are a "early adopter", put the Vista on the Desktop, and XP pro on the Lappy.

I think.

I was using a Vista home basic Turion laptop last night, and it was - if you will pardon the expression - dog slow.

Errr, did you mean, paul9, running "DooG slow" ?
Ah! Primate slow !

VISTA must be a major embarassment for M$.
First they get delayed and delayed and..well, you get the picture. My guess and I'm probably not the only one, they went to market before they were comfortable doing so.

Memory makers went and invested in capacity for more memory in anticipation of a memory -use surge --which probably only partly materialized, so prices on memory dropped. Credibility was damaged
People are asking for the XP rather than the VISTA models, so stores are in an advertising dither..

It co$t the Company an estimated 7 $ BILLION dollars to develop and release it--when will they recover costs, let alone see a profit?

The "aura" of "newer is better" that started with Windows 95 is blemished and the next OS might be greeted with some scepticism, rather than eager anticipation.

I think more Laptops than desktops are being sold, and VISTA is really not suited for lappies --or can't run in its native applications-- unless its $2,000-$3,000 premium machine.

Finally, I think there has been a sense for some time now that XP is "good enough" as people are not seeing the BSOD as much. Those who didn't think it's "good enough" may have migrated already to other OS'es, such as one of the more user -friendly Linux like Ubentu or xandros..

M$ will probably have to do something to "re-invent" itself if it wants to keep growing.

Vista SP1 will fix alot of stuff for vista on a laptop,

and yes you can repartition a drive with vista, (even the drive with the os on it,)

you just tell it to shrink volume, and set what size to use, than make new partition
