| Xandros vs. Windows vs. Ubuntu
Yeah, I know Xandros is not entirely free, but ASUS uses it (customized) on its Eee , so there must be some good things about it.
Rather than jumping on the Ubuntu bandwagon, what the "true Facts" about Xandros?
For a Desktop? A lappy ? A dual-boot with Windows?

I was just reading a bit about Xandros and it seems like it's a good distribution. It uses KDE as the desktop which is a good choice if you want similarity to the Windows desktop. You can theme it so it looks virtually identical to XP if you want.
Unfortunately, they don't have a Live CD that you could try out of Xandros but probably just browse around their forums to see what others are saying. http://forums.xandros.com/index.php?...06d21da2d29a72
As for Ubuntu, which is what I'm using on my laptop right now, it worked out of the box for me. All the devices were recognized (unlike Windows) and I didn't have to download drivers from Toshiba (unlike Windows). If you want the KDE desktop by default, look at Kubuntu which is Ubuntu with the KDE desktop installed by default. You can tweak KDE on there just as much as on Xandros.

I used Xandros for sometime and it is not free, plus if they did not changed how video card drivers are installed I would avoid it. I was behind Ubuntu even then on the kernel version it was using. As for software options Pclinuxos and Ubuntu are both better choices. I use PClinuxos now and I am vary happy with it. Most of the codecs, java and others are installed on installation. There is no need enable this repository for this or that in PClinuxos you just start synaptic and search for any of the below and mark install. I never liked the run around they give you on Ubuntu to install codecs. If you want MP3 playback and encode... install lame from synaptic
here have a look at PClinuxos http://www.pclinuxos.com/
here is a website that sell Computers and they have a yourtube video of PClinux http://linpc.us/

I think Xandros will be based off of Ubuntu in the future, if I'm not mistaken.
If you're going to get Ubuntu, wait for the next release to come out in 5 or 6 days.
GnomePPP worked much better under the Alpha of 8.04 vs. 7.10. |

Xandros is based of Ubuntu. Our EEE has it on there. And I gotta say it's nice. You get all the Ubuntu back end, with KDE as the window manager. It's very very easy to use, and is quite quick on the EEE.
I would recommend it. |

"...Xandros is based of Ubuntu..."
This is inaccurate. Both are based upon, and are therefore essentially separate forks of, Debian.
"...with KDE as the window manager..."
Albeit, Xandros' version has been considerably modified to resemble Windows more closely.
