| Which linux for a server?
Just wondering which Linux distro would be the easiest to set up for an older server.
I got the old P-III server for $10 @ my school. It also has a gig of RAM, with SCSI drives.

| Xubuntu.
All the goodness of Ubuntu back end, plus a lightweight window manager.
I run it on my old P3 866Mhz box with 512RAM, and it runs great.
That's my vote! |

I have XUbuntu, but is the desktop version suitable for a server (possibly a local game server or just plain web)? |

Yes.
Of course make sure the game server your trying to setup will run in Unix, which I believe most will.
Linux really shines when it comes time for setting up a server. That's really the #1 reason why most people run any sort of *nix. |

I've heard Sun was going to do Open Solaris - if so, then that would be a good option.

I like xubuntu but I don't know if I'd run it as a server unless you don't mind configuring apache and such from the config files. I prefer the text config files so that's fine for me but if you like to use a gui I'd look elsewhere (i use fedora if i want to set up a server QUICK but it's pretty heavy... I don't know how it would run on that machine!

fedora or centOS - more server than desktop.

I do have centOS, too. I'll try it.
Light on resources, if I remember correctly. |

I'd go with a base install of Debian then install what you need the server to run as well as a light window manager like JWM.
