Kubuntu install issues

The other day I thought I would switch over to Linux on my desktop. Unfortunately, it seems that I am having some trouble. It freezes at "Waiting for root filesystem" as I install. The MD5 on the disk checks out, have tried a few burns as well.

The distro is Kubuntu 6.06. I have an ABit IP35-E Motherboard. Some Googling revealed other IP35-E issues circulating around that JMicron SATA controller and people with all SATA drives. Unfortunately that is my case. It was suggested in many forums that you add "--irqpoll" as a boot option, but that does not work. Since it is the JMicron chip running the SATA show, I cannot put my drives into AHCI mode, which the kernel is looking for.
Is there a parameter to not use AHCI? Or what am I missing? I would really like to move over to my comfy Kubuntu world . . . .

edit: Seems like some have found sucess by installing with the alternate install disk, and then adding "all_generic_ide" to the kernel line in /boot/grub/menu.lst. I am downloading the alternate CD as I post this. Will update on how it went.

Well, I burned the Alternate CD last night, and Install will begin, but still the same issue. The install wont recognize my drives, it asks me to load a module for the cd-rom. I try the one labeled "cd-rom" and it goes back and says that setup cant find my drives.

Am I just SOL on installing Kubuntu? What do you all suggest?

Install Ubuntu.

Or keep at it with troubleshooting installing Kubuntu. Im sure if you keep googling, and trying things out, it'll work out.
Why arent you installing a newer version?
Kubuntu - Download

Oops. It is the 8.04 version that I have . . . Ubuntu does the same thing as well on me.

Tracking it down, I see that the IRQ for SATA 1-4 on the ABit IP-35 boards is "double-booked"(anyone else can verify?). Since the IP35-E only has 1-4 . . . some similar issues seem to be coming from the ide-piix module. I will try blacklisting that module at boot, will report on what happens. Any other suggestions?

I also had a similar issue. PCBSD would install, but Linux refused to install.
You want to try a different distro, such as Mandriva or SUSE. That may help. Or, use PCBSD.

Fedora Core FTW!!

I myself have never had a issue with Kubutnu/Ubuntu/Xubuntu finding my drives. But I don't run a RAID setup or anything like that, so I have no idea really on how to fix it.

I take it you've hit the forums? There has to be somebody out there that has that board and Ubuntu, that knows how to get it to work.
Have you made a thread on the Kubuntu forums?
