Ubuntu: 3 things I need to know.

I am considering one of the Ultraportables, like $350 DELL mini for Wide wifi outdoor browsing.

Does it contain a Firewall and antiVirus Software?
    Are these available elsewhere?

Will it work with Cellular Aircards the cell phone Companies provide with Data accounts? Are their packages available for this?

Other flavors of Linux, like Xandros version that ASUS Eee uses?

The way I look at it, as Linux gains OEM popularity, the Hackers/malware type will be building against it.

    ThanX,
    MegalosSkylaki

    Firewall:

    Linux.com :: Installing a firewall on Ubuntu

    Antivirus:

Avast Antivirus for Ubuntu Desktop -- Debian Admin

What is the model of the aircard we are talking about?

Dang if I know -- yet.

I'll investigate the likely candidates for ultraportable, see if I can get a make on the aircard, and get back to you.

    ThanX.

You do not need anti-virus software to protect a linux operating system. But you could do windows users a favour by installing anti-virus on a linux box to scan files you got from windows users which you intend to send to other windows users i.e. protecting windows users from each other.

The way linux is built, making viruses and malware for it is very hard and the effort will not pay off to just attack the average joe (as in the case of windows).

Attacks against linux systems will focus on select high-profile targets where investing the huge time and effort to hack in to them pays off with money, data, goods.

No hacker will want to invest hours, days, sweat and effort, to hack in to your linux box to steal your family fotos, regardless of how many people start using linux.
