internet problem

I have installed Linux Mandriva alongside XP but unfortunately
having problems with the internet connection. The balloon message
over the network icon in the system tray said 'not connected'
but I have clicked something and it now says 'Network is up on interface eth0'
and the red cross has been replaced by a blue tick.
However, I am unable to connect to any websites in either Firefox nor
Konqueror. I think that is what it is called

I would be veeeery grateful if anybody can give me some advice
in simple terms if possible.

I haven't had much of a play with Linux (but just wait until I've sorted out the computer room, rebuilt both of my servers and rebuilt three of my other computers..!) but can you tell me/us what the IP address your Linux machine is getting...

If you have any other computers on your network, then you should compare it with these. The info you're after is:

1) The IP of the computer (but not so much about the last group of numbers - so for example 192.168.2.X should be good enough)
2) The "gateway" address.

For example...

IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.2.102
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.2.10
