I want to run linux but the problem is that its a huge download for dial up (it tells me that it will take an entire week) so I want to know where I can get it locally.
I live in Hilliard, Ohio and microcenter doesn't seem to have it. |

Which are you looking for and/or to what purpose would you like to apply it?
Dual Boot OS?
Thumb drive Operating system for the ultimate in portability
Pc diagnostic and testing with some decent data recovery?
Personally I like Knoppix: OSDisc.com - Linux - Knoppix
For a whopping $1.95 you can have your very own CD. Add $4.00 and it is a dvd. You really do not need the dvd as the current version is under 700 mb. |

I'm just looking for it just to try it out for now with the possibility of using it as my main OS, and my son wants to get it for a college project of his.
Whats the difference between knoppix and kubuntu? I hear all kinds of great stuff for kubuntu. |

If your son goes to college he should have no problem downloading it there. |

Thats what I was thinking. Then he told me that the college he goes to only allows an internet connection at a certain time in the dorms. Thus he says he can't download it because he works at that same time.
I have my doubts that he doesn't have time though, so it must be him playing world of warcraft when he's not at work. |

With Knoppix you download the new version and is not as easily "upgradeable" as ubuntu. It is more or less designed to be run off of a live cd or my personal favorite. Thumb/Flash Drive. I picked a 16 gig corsair up a few weeks ago for 20 bucks Newegg.com - CORSAIR Flash Voyager 16GB Flash Drive (USB2.0 Portable) Model CMFUSB2.0-16GB - USB Flash Drives
It is not to say that you cannot install Knoppix. I have never tried. This would defeat the reason I have it. If I dual booted it would have to be Vista and that would have been 3 years ago
ubunto is designed to be more of an installed operating system. Probably has better support and is most likely geared more towards what you are looking for. I have not tried it. Sorry. |

I'm sitting here looking at the linux site and they have some funny names for it. so far my favorite name is damn small linux.
Its even a forseeable download seeing that it is only 50mbs. but I'm not sure if it can be downloaded.
EDIT: for clarities sake I meant installed as an OS on the hard drive. |

Yes I understood installed to your hard drive and why I recommended ubuntu. Damn small linux prides itself of being stripped down of many of the features you "might" need to use this as a primary operating system. Who knows however dsl prides itself on being modular also.
Nothing like jumping into it! Hurray for you! |
