| Linux/Ubuntu Help/
hello
i have been using ubuntu and it has been working ok right now but Im not sure how to use the software sources. like when im downloading something i need some kind of key and im not sure were the key is. and what software sources is and what software sources I should get. I am also not sure if it would be a good operating system for my new build. It is going to be a family computer.
I cant seem to get my sound working on my laptop on ubuntu. i realy cant seem to find drivers for linux it seems much harder.
Is there a good guide of how to use software sources.
is there any good software that i should get.
is there any viruses written for linux? is there any antivirus for linux.
I tried to configure this firewall but it was much more confusing than windows lol. so is there a good guide on that.
is there an easy way to find linux drivers because im building a new computer and im probably going to use linux.
anything you can tell me about ubuntu and linux would be most helpfull.
thanks |

Is that what you mean? Quote: |

| What does your family do do with the computer is the question you need to ask yourself. Quote: |

ok sorry for repeating myself so many times.
I go into system then into administrative then into software sources then i put in my admin key. then i go to the third party software tab and add a new. and then it says i need a key to get some software and it also says that these keys are used to protect your computer from malicious software.
Ok my family uses the computer for Internet surfing, watching videos, looking at emails. playing the occasional game, looking at stocks, Word processing, power point presentations, burning cd's/dvd's, downloading music.
is there a good DVD conversion software for Linux that i can convert my avi files into DVD compatible on my DVD player?
thanks for your help |

There is a key that you generated the first time when you were trying to install the software. You will use that key.
As for office products, you will want to install openoffice. Firefox can be installed to surf the internet. What kind of games are you talking about? Configuring WINE to play games made for pc will be out of your league as of right now since you are new to Ubununtu.
Here is a chart to find applications similar to what you would use on windows http://wiki.linuxquestions.org/wiki/...ndows_software |

The main thing is the drivers for the motherboard. If you do a search for ASRock A790GMH and Ubuntu, there seem to be some bugs with the graphics card? I dont know anything specific about that motherboard, so I cant give you details if it works with Ubuntu without loading some drivers. On that newegg website someone commented with Quote: |
Other Thoughts: I installed 8 GB of GSkill DDRII 1066 memory and AMD Phenom II 810. On first boot memory was recognized as DDR II 800 which was easily taken care of with BIOS adjustment. Overclocked to 3.0 GHz with stock cooler, temp increase 7 degrees. Ubuntu 8.10 doesn't recognize the Gigabit Ethernet but 9.04 does also for Ubuntu fans install from the VGA then download radeon hd 3xxx driver from ATI and install. Then switch to DVI. The one supplied by ubuntu restricted extras is a bit buggy with google earth. Thus far I am very happy with this purchase. | This should give you a general idea on installing drivers Ubuntu Jaunty Installation Guide - cchtml.com |

what would be the best ubuntu to download for the system i have. right now I am using ubuntu 9.04 desktop and I am having some problems. so are these drivers made by normal people. so ubuntu will atomaticly find drivers for you? thats cool but sometimes it doesnt work right?
and if some drivers did not work then what do you do. for example my laptop sound does not work. its an Acer Aspire 6920G and everything seems to work ok but i looked in the device manager and lots of things have question marks on them.
this is my sound card specs.( if you need any more specific specs just tell me)
codec: Realek ALC889
codec: LSI ID 1040
thanks again |
