    Changing HD with Ubuntu

I would like to change my HD in my Ubuntu machine, but unfortunately the replacement is an IBM Deskstar, and the Hitachi sight doesn't have a utility for this as far as I can see.
    Support - Downloads and Utilities

Is there a program for Ubuntu that will let me do this without a complete install?

I'm not new to Linux, but am far from an expert, especially with text interface.

    Thank You in advance.

The only way I know moving an OS is by using an imaging tools such as Ghost. I dont think Ive heard of some application or a set of commands to move an os over to a new drive

I was thinking of a utility like Western Digital or Seagate has for installing a new HD.
    Are those considered Ghost programs?

Hypothetically, if it was a Western Digital or a Seagate drive, would those utilities work with Linux?

    OK, Thanks GZ.
I guess it is good practice installing Ubuntu. Of the 5 machines I've installed it on, this is the only one that gave me a problem all 3 times, only due to my ignorance. I had to fiddle with the Nvidia drivers and the Sound Blaster. I'm still not sure what made them work.
Maybe this time I'll figure it out.

What version are you running of Ubuntu?

    EDIT:
That doesn't really matter I guess.
    I know of this one
    Main Page - Partimage
And also I've heard that latest norton ghost software supports ext3, so it should work for what your wanting.

I've used Clonezilla before and it's very nice:
    Clonezilla

Used it to copy a Vista install from my old laptop drive to my new laptop drive.

    Thanks.
I decided to wait and see if the owner wants Ubuntu or if he wants to buy windows of some kind.

I will save your link for sure though, I'm sure it will come in handy for Windows also.

please don't take this as a thread crap, but the IBM Deathstar isn't exactly the highest rated drive... I've had more than a few die on me!

Linux Mint, which is based on Ubuntu, has a backup feature which allows you to backup your install on cd or a pen drive, which would let you then swap out the drive for a new one. APTonCD is the program name.

Thanks for the tip on Mint. I'll be using Linux/Ubuntu more, so anything I learn helps.

As for the Deathstars, I rarely see them, and was shocked when I picked up a 2002 and 2000 computer with Deathstars that still worked.

Edit; I had a third computer I was working on that also has a 2002 Deathstar, with a bad spots on the disk, that I seemed to be able to repair with a win98se startup disk.

I guess bad things do come in 3s.

As a hobby I fix up old computers, and give them to friends and family that don't have computers, that,s the only reason I'm involved with Deathstars at all.

I Like Seagate and Western Digital myself.
