I would suggest Ubuntu for beginners, eventually when your more experienced you could go into fedora, gentoo, etc. And as always they are all free!

I like Ubuntu also. I haven't tried any of the others in several years now.

The last few versions, are the first I have seen that install easier than Windows.
    Usually 100% by itself.

    Go with Ubuntu

I'm also new to Linux, and recently installed Ubuntu. I dual boot from Win7/Ubu, and so far everything has been great. The installation for Ubuntu is supposed to be very simle because it has the option for auto install, however, I chose to do a manual install the OS so that I could manuall partition my hard disk, but thats just because I enjoy playing around with computers. You can also run a demo of Ubuntu within windows to try it out, so you do not have to partition your hard disk. Ubuntu has been very stable for me, and as a life long Windows user, I can say that Ubu is very friendly to those who are new too Linux.
The one con I have heard about Ubuntu 10.10 (newest) is that some of the users found that the OS wouldn't let them enable their wireless adapter cards, and this has proved to be a rather tedious problem to fix. I didn't run into the problem though, and was even able to download new drivers for my wireless card over Ubuntu.

It's so easy to try different versions, unlike Windows.

As, I said, I haven't tried any for a while, but Adriane Knoppix is worth a try.
It talks, and reads everything on the screen.
I don't know as I could stand it all the time, but it is different, and interesting.

I think RicheemxX suggested it in a post, about using it as a recovery disk.

1+ for Ubuntu. And when you start using it, don't think it isn't an advanced and cool linuxdistro just because it's for beginners. You can do everything in Ubuntu that you can with any other distro!
