I can relate to that, I wipe an installation of XP, trying to dual boot by installing Ubuntu on top.
It was operator error though, exasperated by a bug in my BIOS.
I had a 160gig IDE, and 2 -80 gig SATA in a RAID.
It had been so long, since I did an install on this board I forgot that when an IDE drive was installed, it would ignore the SATAs.
They also showed as exactly the same size.
The main reason it screwed up was because I had done this many times, on other computers, and wasn't paying attention.
The worst part was, I wipes both drives, Main, and backup.
Luckily I always have 2 backups, and was able to recover, all but a weeks data.
(I had just converted 50 vinyl albums, to MP3)

Probably the most data I collected, in years, all gone.
I haven't had the urge to redo it since.
I say this, because I wonder why, you don't already have everything backed up??
The saying here is, if it is not backed up, it must not be important.
