    Gimp 2.8, install confusion

Is there a easy way to install the newest Gimp 2.8, on the newest Ubuntu12.04.

When I run ./configure for gimp2.8, I keep getting missing program messages.
I've been adding program after program, via tar balls, and am stuck on Gimp needs,gegl2.0 and gegl2.0 needs glid2.28.0. or newer, but I only have 2.32.1.

I'm still on the last version...but I think I just installed via the software centre...or "sudo apt-get install gimp"

    here ya go

just open a terminal and put in the first set of commands... it will tell Ubuntu to look at the site's repositories for the gimp install files...then you update your system (always before/after packages are installed)...then install gimp...yadda yadda

Thanks, I'll give it a try.

With all this command line stuff, I'm actually relearning Linux commands.

I can almost install a program, from a tar ball, without looking, at my notes.

    I'll let you know.

    That did it, thank you.

I was missing the step" apt-get update".
I guess that is what I was doing, 1 program, at a time.

Now if I can get my wife to try it.
She still is using Photo Shop 5.0, that came out with Windows 95.
I can't believe it still works perfectly, with XP.

I don't think my luck will hold, for a Win 7 upgrade, and I can't afford Adobe, again.(retired now)

My next hurtle, is getting her to use a laptop, with Linux, to try it out.

    Thanks again

The gimp is great! Has completely fulfilled any photo editing I need to do. As for an Illustrator replacement...Scribus and Inkscape are both extremely powerful open-source applications.
