Hello!
I just installed MDK9.1 and now want to make a dedicated CS server. How do I get the neccessary files?
Alot of questions, so here goes:
1. Is there anywhere else besides FilePlanet that I can download the file 'hlds_l3103.tar.gz'?
2. I have read the How-To for setting up a basic linux CS server. But, will I need a unique CD key to be able to use this machine as a LAN server? What about on the 'net?
3. On some links nukes gave me they had 'cs_15_full.tar.gz' but on the CS Server site they make a reference to the file named 'hlds_l3103.tar.gz' They are different files, aren't they? I thought that the 'cs_15_full.tar.gz' was the mod for HL, while 'hlds_l3103.tar.gz' was the dedicated server.
Any help is appreciated!
Thanks!
David

I downloaded it (finally) from FilePlanet, but ended up with 'hlds_l3103.bin'. Do I just change the '.bin' to '.tar.gz'?

if its a .bin file, see if its executable. (Do "ls -l" and look for the exe flag - x)
then change to the directory and run it. Might be wrong though.
If you checked the other thread I posted alternative download locations there, along with a few howtos.

yeah it's an executable file (i'm messing around with it right now).
just run ./hlds_l3103.bin and it'll give you the EULA and after you type "yes" it'll unpack the tar.gz file
no you don't need a separate key since you can't play the game with this
hlds is the main half-life dedicated server and cs_15 is the mod, just like on the client side you have to install half-life first and then counter-strike. after you've unpacked hlds copy the cs file into the main half-life and extract it there (it'll create the cstrike folder on it's own). |

I tried doing './hlds.bin' but here's what it says: Code: [david@localhost Documents]$ ./hlds.bin
bash: ./hlds.bin: Permission denied Also, I have it set to not start x when it boots up. But when I try to login as root(in CLI) it says my password is wrong. I know that it's right, but does the password change when you're not in X? It has special characters in it, is that why it doesn't work? I'm lost on this one...

chmod +x hlds.bin
will set the permissions so you can execute it.
AND:
Will you stop bumping the ****in' thread!
There are only like 10 threads in this forum and you're just spamming to get the post count up.
The only time you have an excuse to bump is when it drops off the front page so: QUIT WITH THE BUMPING!

Nukes:
================
I'm sorry, but I think you have the wrong idea...
I only bumped once and that is probably the 6th or 7th time I've ever bumped in my techimo history.
Also, I bumped so that people would see that I edited my next to last post. Otherwise they might not look at it because they wouldn't get an email saying there was a new post. I'm NOT trying to get my post count up. Look at other posts of mine. I try to not post unless I have something beneficial to those involved. Sorry that I upset you, and I'll be more careful next time.
================
Well, I think I've got it working for the LAN. But, I'm gonna try to get it on the 'net too. When I start it up, everything's fine, then I type 'status' and it shows that my IP address is: Local loopback connection. Will people on the internet be able to join my server? I have a router(I'm on DSL) and I have this machine set as the DMZ. Will that do it?
I'm gonna be starting the server friday night around 8PM CST, and it will probably be running until 11-12PM CST. If you're able to, please try to join, and see if you can play on it. PM or post and let me know if it works for you or to get more info...
David
BTW, I'm gonna be starting a thread in the gaming section just to let people know that they can try to join my server. I hope that's ok if I start it...

Firstly I apologise about what I said, it was uncalled for. I think I got you mxed up with someone els who posted about a CS Linux server or maybe another person who kept bumping his thread. Please accept my apology.
You will need to forward the appropriate ports to the server, the ones required should be listed in the HLDS documentation. Also I am a bit suspicious about the "loopback internal connection" If it plays on the LAN that is fine though, just so long as it isn't using lo instead of eth0 or whatever it should be.
You may also want it to register with the master servers so people using HLs built in server browser or gamespy can join. Again, that should be included with the server docs. |
