k, did you completely finish the install? did you set it up to start xfree on boot? You should have booted into KDE with the setup that you want to do. Did you select boot KDE automatically?

type in xstart or startx if you want to load the gui

Yeah, you have Linux up and running. Now to start X (the GUI) do what GZ3 said. Next time you set up another distro of linux you can get it to start X automaticly when it boots. It's one of the choices during the install process.

outta curiosity try logging out (logout) then try logging in as root and try startx again ( wanna see if it's a permissions problem and not a config problem)

nope, logged on as root, tried startx,
full message is;
execve failed for /etc/X11/X (errno 13)
giving up
xinit; No such file or directory (errno 2): unable to connect to x
server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error
Thanx all

ahh sounds like a config problem.. have you tried running xf86config?? amke sure you put in the RIGHT specs for your video card/ monitor..
If unsure what the settings should be post the make/model of the vid card/monitorNever argue with a computer, without a hammer.

okay, AzKidd69, getting somewhere here,
I ran xf86config, answered the questions, it wrote the file. It then said check the file, when I entered the filename (/etc/X11/XF86Config ) I got permission denied.
I am still logged on as root !

since you already ran xf86config i would try loggong out then back in again as a user. you might want to run xf86config as you the user, not root. it will let you write it your your home directory then try "startx" again.
SD
p.s. you have to add the command then enter the path of the file like this:
kedit /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
or
mcedit /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
(it could be XF86Config, on some distros like suse i belive)
just substitute "kedit" or "mcedit" with whatever editor you end up using/liking.
