| Problems inserting modules with insmod
I am still trying to get my radeon working in X11. I have pinned down the problem a bit, so here goes:
XFree86 4.3 requires DRM 1.3
The kernel only provides 1.1.1
I got some files that should fix it, and followed a howto, but there is this problem that seems to crop up from time to time. When I try to insert certain modules, the insmod or modprobe command gives me an error about some unresolved symbol: Code: richard@nexus richard $ su
Password:
root@nexus richard # insmod /lib/modules/2.4.20-xfs-r2/gatos/radeon.o
/lib/modules/2.4.20-xfs-r2/gatos/radeon.o: unresolved symbol _mmx_memcpy
root@nexus richard # insmod /usr/local/src/gatos/drm-kernel/radeon.o
/usr/local/src/gatos/drm-kernel/radeon.o: unresolved symbol _mmx_memcpy
root@nexus richard # Any idea what could cause this, I thought it might be to do with the kernel and everything else being buit with "-mcpu=athlon-xp" and this was with i686, so Iedited the makefile by hand and no difference as you can see. I'm not really sure what to do about this. If it all carries on I may have to go back to a 'newbie' distro like Slackware or Debian so I can get my hardware acceleration working again.
Running Gentoo 1.4rc2 with all the latest stuff. and the XFS kernel.

If you are getting symbol errors its likely that the module is not built for your kernel version or either your kernel has support for versioned symbols and the module doesn't or vice versa.
In what way is gentoo less of a newbie distro than Slack or debian
Good luck.

I did that, thats the module I'm trying to insert. I am thinking it was something to do with everything being compiled for athlon-xp as I heard there was a bug in the GCC athlon code, I'm gonna try putting it down to notmal athlon, or if that doesn't work I'll put it down to i386. For the performance decreased caused by that it isn't really worth the hassle of having no good 3D.
Eddy: Don't take any offence, I love Slack and Debian, its just I really want Gentoo to work as the programs all run faster because they have been built for my CPU. |

Fixed it. Recompiled kernel as i686 instead of AthlonXP. |

Sounds like a good call, aggresive optimisation often breaks stuff and on many occasions provides very little in noticable performance improvements.
I wasn't offended at all (its only an OS ) I just thought it a bit odd that you said Slack and debian were distro's aimed at newbies but gentoo wasn't. Was just idle curiosity on my part.

It was a joke. I probably should've made it more obvious. However I think Slackware is the best distro all-round. Also I have been talking with the man in charge of college Linux about getting involved and he seemed a bit confused that I should be so interested without having used it, or even looked at it in great detail. I just told him 'I love Slackware' and he is posting me a CD. |

Ahh cool, consider my curiosity satisfied
Let us know what you think of College Linux if you get the time.

I will do, I think mickwish is running it now. It looks ok, just Slack with a few extras. Hopefully compiled for i586 or something. |
