I don't use Gnome, but isn't there a personal settings panel/applet where you can set things like keyboard, mouse behavior, and what have you? There was in Gnome 1.x

I found the mouse configuration applet but there is nothing for double/single click... I read at the Gnome home page that recent versions have "more functional single click mode" ...peerhaps I have to update Gnome

Glad to hear you're giving it a try. I'm using Gnome 2.3.3 (Gnome Desktop using the same numbering scheme the kernel does - if the middle number is odd it's developemental) right now so you may not find the settings in the same location I do but:

Applications -> Preferences -> File Management -> Behavior -> Single Click to activate items.

What distro are you using? If it's RH9 do yourself a favor and update your Gnome version using apt & Nyquist's repository. I wouldn't dream of running 2.2 anymore.

Enjoy.
