Cable Modem in Red Hat
I've just taken the plunge into Red Hat 8 and most things are looking good except that it won't detect my Motorola Surfboard Cable Modem. It has an entry for every other kind of internet access device except a USB Cable Modem. My Modem driver cd doesn't want to work with this OS.
Also, RH detects my sound card but can't configure it. I have a Phillips Acoustic Edge
Any ideas are appreciated

Why are you using USB ????
USB should be avoided at all costs, for networking. I have the Motorola SurfBoard SB4200 (via Ethernet) and it works great with Linux.
Although I am using it via a Linksys router, it also works great connected directly.

Ya know, I never gave that a thought. When I originally put the cable modem in, I used the USB because it was there. For two years, I worked well for me. I've got a couple of ethernet cards laying around....I'll give that a shot. Makes sense. Thanks

Ethernet is connected.....works great in Windows, but can't activate it in Linux. I know its something really obvious. Can anybody point me in the right direction?

If you are connected using a NIC then go ahead and run kuzdu, will do automatic hardware detection.
That or you could load the module manually if you know which module you need to use. Then from there you can either input the settings manually or use dhclient if you are on a dhcp network.
If it is still the USB cabel modem, then you will need to download a driver for it and install that, then load the module for that to work.

That would work assumning the same filesystem and apis....
linux can execute any type of file, that's a file permission thing. To allow linux to properly run a windows executeable it has to be able to interpret all of the commands, file placements and such.
Now, in case you were unaware, linux doesnt use windows drivers, anymore than mac OS uses windows drivers for it's hardware support.
If the problem is his USB cable modem it is a matter of locating the driver, same with the NIC.

I've got the modem problem licked. I removed all mention of the the ethernet card and allowed the card to be rediscovered. This did the trick. I can get on the net now.
Now my current problem is making sense of the registration process as described on redhat.com

Mark, for what it's worth, I couldn't find a linux driver for that Acoustic Edge anywhere. And Red Hat had a notice about a revise registration process on their website.
There's only two things in life. But I forget what they are.

That's right Tom. Their ceritficates have expired and one will need to update that. But for some reason, RedHat.com doesn't want to recognize my username through Mozilla. I'll figure it out.
BTW, I've been so encouraged with my "Linux Experience" that I've gone ahead and upgraded to 9. I've got alot of studying to do, but it looks promising.

You will like RH9, it's pretty slick. Congratulations on your success.
