have I got the bug?
I have been kicking Linux around for several months now. Over the last sevral weeks, I have been using Slackware 9 exclusively. Last night, I had to boot into to W2K to scan an item (haven't took the time to try and configure it yet) and while I was there, I did a little surfing in what used to be my favorite browser, SlimBrowser. In the several hours I was in windows, I had to update my antivirus, update my spybot files and adware. Run Spybot and Adware, which found numerous spyware items. During this time, something hijacked my browser homepage, so, I had to load BrowseHijacker, which I had not gotten around to loading. When it was all over, I couldn't wait to boot back into Linux. In fact, I was still in Windows right before I went to bed and was going to leave it and just boot into Linux in the morning. But, I just could not do it. I HAD to do it before I went to bed; just could not leave my maching in such a vulnerable state..... lol
Have I got the bug or what?

Yep, sounds like it to me.
I had a simular experience when the Blaster Worm was making it's rounds. I had booted to XP, updated my NAV defs, updated Adaware, and promptly got the Blaster Worm because I had not updated my M$ patches. This was the first time I had been booted to XP in about 3 months. I'm usually booted to Mandrake. Serves me right.

Sounds like it's time to configure that scanner in Linux.

yeah, I looked into it and I think that xsane did not support my scanner.... it is a visioneer One Touch 8100 usb. Seem like it supported the 8600/8900 but not the 8100.
Since I have not dug around in this area much yet, is xsane the best scanner/OCR program available in Linux or is there a better one? Also, if anyone know right off hand the best way to use my scanner and wouldn't mind pointing me in the right direction, I would appreciate it!

It looks as though it is bad news on the Visioneer scanner, they do not appear to be supported in Linux. SANE is about the only game in town for Linux scanner access. It is usually quite good and a large number of scanners are now supported -just that unfortunately yours is not. I use sane with an Epson Perfection 1650 Photo (and previously with a Mustek EP600-III). It works best with most Epson scanners because Epson has been willing to share information with the open source community.

yeah...i would definitely say you have the bug. I've got it really bad at the moment right now too...in fact i'm considering deleting my windows partition all-together and going pure-linux from now on cause windows has been pissing me off so much lately.
as for the scanner, have you tried the 8600 or the 8900 drivers? sometimes they are "close enough" that you will get some funcionality.

About the Visioneer Scanner:
I've got one too, and there's just no way I can see to get the darned thing to work under Linux without going waaay beyond my comfort zone.
There used to be a pre-alpha backend someone was hacking on, but I couldn't get it to work, and the page seems to have disappeared.

Well for the other side I booted into my RH 9.0 system on Saturday and was greeted with needing to update 9 moduals a patch for the kernel and a couple of other misc updates for some of the proggys I use under RH....So I got to say I love my windows...My AV updates automatically, I have my SMS server pull the windows updates and I pre approve them and then they are auto installed on all of the systems on my domain. I don't visit websites where I have to worry about downloading spywear and I have application rules in place to prevent known spywear from working let alone be installed... So as the story goes....What you use is what you use...both require maintance
Enjoy!-Mntsnow-
