| n00b *HELP* exiting X and installing nVidia drivers
In giving Linux another try, I slapped Red Hat (I think 9) on another drive and put it in my best PC. It's a 3200+, nForce2+MCP, and a Ti 4200. My freind was psoking fun of me for wanting to install video drivers so I could run the screensavers, but seriously, I'd like to actually play TuxRacer and stuff. But here's my problem:
I can't exit X.
When I run "sh nvidia4496", it runs, but then it coughs up a thing about that it can't run while X is started. So I hit CTL-ALT-Backspace, and it slaps me to the logon screen. How do I access the pure command line to install the drivers? And is their anything else I need to know/do in order to install them?
Thanks in advance! |

hello,
at a terminal type init 3 - you need to be logged in as root too

Thank you, is their anything else I need to do after that? Change the "init" to another number? Sorry if I'm a newbie, I haven't really delved into Linux as much as I should. I'll toss around Windows like crazy, but Linux is a little foreign, still have to learn more of it. |

be sure to edit /etc/X11/XF86config (should have said that earlier...) with what text editor you like, change the driver from nv to nvidia and make sure the config loads the correct stuff Code: Section "Module"
Load "dbe"
Load "extmod"
Load "fbdevhw"
Load "glx"
Load "record"
Load "freetype"
Load "type1"
EndSection you do not wanit it to load GLcore or DRI in this section.
that should be it, then type init 5 and you should be set. |

BTW if you get yourself an error "init not found" this means that probably you don't have your PATH set to point to sbin which is where init is, if you get this "error" simply set your path to point to the directory where init is (which is /sbin) also, or just run init giving the full path that would be /sbin/init (run level #). |
