Yes, Linux can read floppies and CDs, you can also mount your WinXP partition (if it is on the same machine) and copy the drivers directly from it. Most likely you have icons on your KDE desktop that you can simply click to mount and right-click to unmount the floppies or CDs.
I can tell you need to learn more of the fundamental concepts in Linux -like mounting and unmounting -you would do well to carefully read the manual and perhaps do an online course like the begginers course over www.linux.org before tackling this winmodem problem. Don't loose heart.
kppp is an applet that provides a user friendly gui to configure your dialup internet connection, it is also a connection interface where you can "sign on." If you can't find kppp on your KDE>Internet menu perhaps it was not installed - you can install it with YaST, just go to the YaST software installer and click the dropdown, to select "Search" and type in "kppp" -from there you can see if its installed, and install if necessary.

The driver will not install automatically...you will probably need to extract the driver then compile it. There is most likely a "Read-Me" file that has the instructions. You will have to "browse" to the driver location and then view the file. |

what's the problem?
@cunokyle
i have the cd for the drivers. but when i try to copy it to /dev/modem it tells me access denied. does suse not automatically load the drivers, when it detect the modem?
thanks a lot

This may sounds silly, but are they the Linux drivers?
Next, what is the name of the driver...the full name as it is listed on the cd? Does it end in tar.gz or something like that? Is it an RPM file?
/dev/modem is your modem...not where the driver will go. If you can give me the name of your driver file I will be able to walk you through the installation process.
SuSE does install drivers when you install the OS...unfortunately they can sometimes be out dated or not quite the correct ones.

yes, sometimes i'm silly. i'm confused because nothing is going on.my printer is also not working.
you are right. the drivers on the cd are win drivers. it's a wincomm 56k, V92 (Intel). i thought that the drivers might be compatible with suse 9.0 pro.
i found yesterday drivers for this modem at intel. but tey have only drivers for suse 8.2. i have them on a floppy disk. can i install them and how?
thanks a lot

i got it. no kpppd or pppd problem. it's a problem with the new kernel parameter "desktop". you have to remove this parameter from the boot loader configuration. here the link http://portal.suse.de/sdb/en/2003/10...nocarrier.html
i did it and it works without any problem.
but anyway thank you all very much. i learned a lot. tomorrow i'll come up with a new question. my printer ( cannon S200SPx ) doesn't connect. and..........
thanks again

Generally speaking, Windows drivers don't work on Linux. I had a suspicion that it was not a driver issue because SuSE already includes drivers for several popular winmodems. I suggested kppp because I thought it would be an easier way for you to configure the connection. Anyway, it's good news that you have resolved the problem -see what a little research can do?
Regarding the printer check over at www.linuxprinting.org -be forewarned, they list your model as a "Paperweight"

There is a problem with the new kernel parameter "desktop". you have to remove this parameter from the boot loader configuration. The link referred to earlier no longer exists - but all you need to do is remove the text 'desktop' from the bootloader configuration. Leave other text on the same line intact. Spacing will be corrected. I performed this edit and fixed the same problem. Now my Intel 536EP V.92 connects at 50666 !! Previously all I had was a NO CARRIER message and no completed connection. - Question - does anyone know what the 'Desktop' text in the bootloader is really supposed to do ?
