| Suse 9.0 pro--cannot connect to the internet
just installed suse 9.0 pro on my computer ( pt4. 1.8 GHz , win xp pro / suse 9.0 pro, dial-up modem). it's my first contact to linux and i'm not a tech.
the installation process without any problems. first i tried to access the internet. i can hear the dial-up tone but it doesn't connect.
found something in the log
pppd (0): sending:ATDT 029009600
pppd (0):waiting for carrier
pppd (0):NO CARRIER
029009600 is the phone number of the isp
it dails without stop.
i hope you can help
thanks a lot |

Sounds like the phone is not being answered on the other end -are you sure you entered the correct phone number?
Which ISP -does it support standard ppp dialup connections? Did you use YaST to create the connection or some other applet? Are you sure you have your login name, and password correctly? I'm not in front of a SuSE 9 install right now, and I don't use dialup anymore, but if you give a little more information perhaps I can dig around my SuSE9 box and come up with some helpful hints.
When I used dialup I created a connection using kppp -the name may have changed. Typically I selected PAP (password authenticaiton protocol) and just had to give my login name and password... oh yeah, I also found it best to add the nameserver address directly to /etc/resolve.conf |

Its a good OS for many purposes.
SUSe should be as good as any other Linux distro in that respect, but I think it is more geared towards the desktop. The likes of RH and Debian are more geared towards servers, but they still make good desktops. Do you know your way around Linux? If so it may be worth looking at Debian or something, if not then I doubt you can go far wrong with SUSE.

I'm very new to Linux well never used it, but I'm pretty confident in computers overall. SO Suse is good for linux noobs? I'm mainly going to use it as a server but also a media center. How much is Debian and Redhat? Those downloads are very confusing. |

SuSE is a great desktop OS. It is also a great OS for newbies.
Back to the original question: What modem are you using? Is it a winmodem? I know that with my winmodem I had a very simialar problem where SuSE installed the driver and I could not connect for the same reason. It kept saying no carrier.

Rand Dusing -you hijacked mark03's thread, we were hoping to get him going on dialup- SuSE is one of the best all around Linux distros, great for newbies, powerful configuration tools, ton's of included software in the Professional version, and all the advanced power of Linux. BTW: SuSE 9 Professional for a home server, the Personal edition is not a good choice for a server because a lot of server software/tools are left out. |

using KPPP I can only connect as root, I cannot connect as a normal user, so I ' SU - ' and use wvdial no problems.

I had to download the driver for it from the modem's website(in my case an intel chipset modem) and then install that driver and I have no problems with it now. |
