Linux running winmodem?

I just downloaded Linux Mandrake, and was wondering if it is possible to use a winmodem with linux? I have read that you can download special drivers that will support some of them, but what Mandrake came with, it wont work. Also, I installed the linux on one box, and then tried to transfer the hard drive into another box...but it only comes up in a all text format...I'm wondering what might cause this.
Thanks

Some winmodems are supported in Linux. What modem do you have? What is the chipset or name?

as for the text only screen...that happened because your hardware does not match what was configured to the install of Linux. you could reconfigure X...not really easy if you are new to Linux...may just want to reinstall...would be better to do that anyway...it can configure all of your hardware correctly that way.

The chipset on the modem is a Lucent I56LVP-F1 1646T00. I found one site with claims to drivers but with a broken link it was a dead end. I installed linux on one box because it wouldn't boot on the other machine when i tried to boot from the CD or the floppy...the monitor would freak out and say "out of range" and shut off
