What causes a dim display? Thinkpad 600E

I bought a Thinkpad 600E and it works fine except the display is dim and doesn't seem to have any contrast. I have removed the display and disassembled it looking for loose connections but that didn't do any good. Before I took it apart I could get the display to go brighter for a second by flexing the display assembly slightly. I would like to try to fix it if I can.

Any ideas or knowledge you can share will be greatly appreciated.

has it got a backlight? if it has one which has failed, then that may be your problem. or maybe it's just a crappy display. has it got a protective plastic film over the screen which should be removed?

No plastic film. I assume there is a backlight. The brightness slide bar does brighten and dim the lcd but it's not very bright and doesn't seem to have much contrast.
