laptop

I am going on a long trip and plan on buying a laptop so I can continue to receive and send my emails. The motels I have been checking have high speed for the most part but some are dial up.
How to hook up to dial up or high speed when I am in a motel.

It depends, you need to call the hotel to find out. If it is dial-up, you just dial into the server for your internet provider with a phone number they will provide you. The jack is usually on the phone or sometimes it is on the lamp. Broadband can be a LAN tap or wireless. If it is wireless you can usually request a cd that will configure your computer for their wireless network. You also need to make sure you have a wireless adapter that is capable of both 802.11b and g.

Caveats...

Make sure you get specifics on the pricing, in writing in possible. The various hotels use different billing methods. On one trip to Tampa (Embassy Suites I think), they provided a lan tap but charged some horrendous rate each day. A peer staying in another hotel was being charged based on usage/KB downloaded. Last year, on another trip to Atlantic City (a hotel located in a casino), they charged one flat rate for the length of your stay...unlimited usage. Save yourself a voucher nightmare and verify the costs before plugging in.
