Stow your Gear - Victorinox WebSak

I think I have finally found the almost-perfect laptop bag in the Victorinox WebSak (2.0). It's a backpack for us urban type chock full of goodies....everything has a place, there is a place for everything...almost.

First off, the bag is $225, but is well worth the price. On the rear exterior panel, you get two zippered pockets. The top one is meant as a cord carrier and handles all of my cables (USB, mic, LAN, phone, power, USB/Serial adapter, misc.). The bottom pocket is more organizational. There are holders for 'cards' (credit card, driver license, work ID, etc.) and pens. Also in this pocket is one zippered pocket that i use to store some accesories (USB drive, bluetooth adapter, etc.) and one velcro 'pouch' which can be used to hold even more. Finally, on the backside of this pocket is yet another pocket that is secured with a zipper. Perfect for CD's, or in my case, and iPaq.

On one side panel, you get an innovative bottle holder. It's a mesh pocket with a zipper. When not in use to hold a drink, it can be zipped up and used for additional storage. Unzippering allows the mesh to expand to accomodate a bottle/can. On the other side, it's a basic pocket secured with velcro.

Inside is even more fun. The bag features 1800 cubic inches (?) of storage. However, I doubt all of that is available because of the way it is setup. The first area is meant to store papers. The problem I found is that the back portion is shared with the exterior pockets...so there is one firm side and one soft side. My concern is that my documents will get mashed. I'm currently using that area to store my Kensington cable and CD holder. A cool thing is that there is a velcro strap that goes over the pocker, presumbaly to keep everything in place. Another caveat about the inside is that there is no type of separator at the bottom. So if you store something small in one section, it could slip underneath into another section. The next section inside features six pockets. These pockets could be used to carry floppies, PC Cards, or other small accesories. Right now, I use them to hold 3 PC Cards, iGO power block, and a bluetooth GPS unit. Everything fits comfortably. Behind this, you have the area to hold your laptop. The bag comes preequipped with a hardened computer sleeve that is also available seperatly for purchase. The sleeve holds laptops up to 15 inches and is removable. The great thing about it is that it truly offers very good proctection. The hardened sides are 'marketed' as being puncture proof and are very sturdy. The bottom of the sleeve features a suspension system that boasts protection up to 30 feet.

The body exterior (the side that touches your back) is very comfortable. The backing, itself, and the straps are fully cushioned. The straps are also adjustable, although, more slack could have been added to accomodate us grown southern folk a little better. What is there is fairly suffiecient though. The straps come with 'whistle' loops that can be used to clip items on to and the bag itself ships with a hardened cell-phone holder which conviently gives you an excuse to use the loops. Finally, probably my favorite feature, there are compression straps on each side to aid in making the profile of the bag smaller.

All in all, this is an excellent bag for any gadget freak. There are some improvements that can be made (V3.0 maybe?) but what is there is great. If you can find it, I highly recommend it.

EDIT: Real Life Test
After using the bag for a couple of days, a few notes:

-Stylish. Not that should matter to a true gear-head, but expect alot of complements.
-I'd prefer compression straps with buckles. The compression straps use a nylson strap which are adjustable. Because of the design, you have to loosen them in order to open the top portion of the bag. Minor inconvience.
- Things are fairly easy to get to. I was able to maneveur comfortably on a train and bus. With little effort, I was able to whip out my laptop and aircard.
-The cellphone holder is pretty decent. It closes with a magenetic button. The sides are also elastic so when you place your phone, they stretch to provide a secure fit. It also has a metal clip which is pretty sturdy.

Again I say an excellent bag!!
