I haven't seen any lower than 58

Hi everybody,

I know everybody here feds up with such questions but I got to ask. I have run MATLAB (mathematical software) for couple hours right now and I haven't seen the temperature any lower than 58C. Fans are working but temperature goes beteen 58C and 59C. I believe it is hotter than it should be but I would like to have your opinion too.

What cpu are you running? It is on the high side for an AMD Athlon or XP.

Well, I sure hope your running an AMD, P4s wouldn't dare go that high.

What CPU model are you running?
What heatsink/fan are you running?
How many case fans do you have?
What is the room temperature?

I run an AMD Athlon XP 2400+ and it never goes higher than 49C on full load.

My XP2600 has SETI running everytime the PC is being used, but even when gaming it maxes out at around 50 or 52....

Hi guys,
I am sorry for the incomplete inforamtion.Since I was in a hury in the morning and I guess I forgot to give some necessary information.

System has 3.4 P4 processor with 128MB video card and 1 gig RAM.

Well, I wish I could answer that question about heatsink/fan. But I don't know what kind of information I could get about those tight now,If you can tell me how I can get that info I will get it. There are two fans underneath of the system and room temperature is around 65F(almost 20C) and windows are wide open, afterall it is spring.:-)

dazbo666: I wish I had tepmereature in the range you have,I mifght even be happy.

I could understand to have some heat but running only one mathematical program and having temp. over 57? I could not even imagine how much I would get if I were gaming on this machine. I appreciate all your inputs, thank you.

Did you build this computer yourslef? If not, its probably a cheapo heatsink that came with the CPU.

Your room temperature is low; I cant imagine how hot it would be if it was warmer.

I didn't build it by myself but sure I wish I could. It is not a desktop it is a laptop. Room temp seem okay almost 20C and all windows are open so there is a good circulation around the laptop.

I was kinda thinking it was a laptop. Using common sense, you would think a laptop would run warmer than a desktop, as there aren't as many fans nor does it have good air circulation. Also those batteries get pretty hot, so maybe the temperature sensor is picking up the heat radiating off of the battery.

Can battery dissipate heat even though unit plugged in the wall? I mean is it active all the time? I agree with you on expecting higher degrees in the laptop systems,I would say around 50 is not bad for the given configuration but I have over 58 under light load(only one program running nothing else).

intel site gives this info about P4 3.4 processor ,
Thermal Guideline:89.0W
Thermal Spec:68°C

I don't want to believe but I guess that thermal spec is the maximum operating temperature and I have already seen 60C.

When I had my laptop plugged in, the battery would stay hot even when it was fully charged, so I imagine the wall is constantly charging the battery as the battery is providing the machine with power.
