"If you plan to build your own notebook, there is some bad news: it isn’t for the faint of heart. Although assembling a desktop computer is very straightforward and isn’t much more difficult than assembling Lego blocks, laptops are quite a different story. Most laptops are made with proprietary parts, and you simply can’t buy as many laptop components off the shelf as you can with desktop parts. If you want a customized laptop, you can get one without building it yourself."

It is doable but you do need to make sure all the parts will work and fit (mainly fit) together in whatever case you decide to get.

I found it!

Go to http://www.freewebs.com/trekkiejt to see exactly what you are looking for. This thing is also near standard size! Exactly the parts and even where to buy them. Mini-ITX, slim drives, even a battery for mobility. I work for a small computer company that repairs computers including laptops so I have had the oportunity to dig into a wide variety of makes, models, and ages of laptops as well as some customizing. I haven't finished this yet but it is looking good so far.
