| Need recommendations on ultraportable laptop...
I've been thinking about getting a laptop and I am having a very tough time deciding what kind to get. Ultimately I want something very small that I can carry around with me easily, it doesn't have to be too powerful as I won't be playing many high end games, but maybe the occasional RTS to kill time on the subway. I would like the price to be somewhere between $1000 and $1500. I'm thinking about maybe an iBook, I've never had a Mac and am interested in trying one out, but that would throw games out of the window. But basically, I just want to be able to surf the web with this thing and type up documents, at least.
Can anyone recommend a good light and small PC based laptop that's at least nice looking? I hate the utilitarian Dells... I'm aiming for CPU speed of at least like 1.3 ghz, at least 256 meg or RAM, 64 Meg video. |

The ibook will suit your needs. The mac has Halo if you like it. You can always get Virtual pc if you want to play games or have software that only runs on XP. I would advise to wait for VPC 7.0. The current VPC is really slow and Microsoft did a crappy job on it. Do you have an apple store near you? If yes, go there and check out the ibooks. You will fall in love with them. Get more ram too. Windows or mac the machine will preform much better with at least 512 MB.

Oh man, virtual PC! Totally forgot all about it. I will have to investigate further. Can it run pretty much any piece of windows software through the emulation?
I'd also like to look at some PC based notebooks... can't really install Linux on Macs.... any suggestions? |

But, as I said before VPC 6.0 runs very slow and microsoft is working on VPC 7.0 which we all expect it to run alot faster. You can install linux on a mac. The most popular linux is yellow dog linux. |

Many people here are in love with the new 64bit E-Machine laptops. DOn't be scared by the e-machine name as these laptops are really good quality using brand name parts. Check them out at the E-Machine website. Only 64bit laptop I know of that you can get for about $1500.

Can VPC run games? I understand it's slow, but I only really want to play the old Kohan game and that runs on like a p2 333 with 32 mb of ram.

If you don't mind having the CD external, then the Fujitsu B3020 would be nice and I really like the touch screen which is nice to use in a subway. http://webshop.fujitsupc.com/fpc/Eco...n.do?series=AB
If you want the DVD/CDR built in, the P5020 is an awesome little laptop and its previous version served me well for two years (I had to give it back to work when I moved). http://webshop.fujitsupc.com/fpc/Eco...n.do?series=P5
Both are rugged and handled the most harsh conditions. On the P2000 (the old version I had), I could watch about 3.5 hours of movies on one battery charge.
