| Need a Dell 51xx Laptop Service Tag
I have an Inspiron 5100. When purchasing this laptop I didn’t know a whole lot about the different types of screens and I ordered a screen designed for a wide viewing angle. That’s nice for DVDs but it accomplishes this at low resolutions so my screen cannot go over 1024*768. I tried to talk Dell into letting me order a new screen but they wouldn’t. And they would only replace screen with the same screen I have now if I were to ever "break". The tech I talked to though said that I could use another user’s service tag, if still under warranty, to order a new screen and have a dell cert. tech install it. My college has a couple of these guys who would be happy to install it for me if I can get my hands on the display, they will even order it and install it. They would use one of their service tags but the college orders a differnt laptop from dell so those wont do any good. So, I need a Dell 51xx series or compatible laptop service tag, still under warrenty prefered, or even out of warrenty, that has a 15inch monitor that can go above 1024*728. On the 5150s this display is the 15" SXGA+ TFT.

Why dont you just sell the laptop and buy another. Thats a lot of work to raise your res. I am sure it will be tough finding someone to offer their service tag up to you.

Not really if I get a service tag I get a new screen for no money in under 2 weeks... as apposed to selling my current laptop for maybe $1300 or so and then spending another grand on top of the $1300 for a new laptop.

Do you realize that Dell is going to want the old screen back as an exchange? |

Well, AFAIK all I need is a service tag and the laptop shop can take care of the rest. So what ever they do is what they do

Phenious,
There is a very high risk if you do so. Moreover, if Dell finds that there was a manupulation with their warranty calls, then your friend's Service Tag and yours would void warranty. Now the technician who comes onsite is going check your system service tag before replacing the parts and over that there is a team in dell who checks if the right parts were received. Now if you returned part is not the same as ordered, there a trigger would be raised and more investigation would follow resulting in the cancellation of Warranty for both the Service Tags. Over that if Dell finds out who gave that information to you on this, the Tech would be terminated as well. So play safe. Buy a New Panel.
Regards

I've heard of people doing this with Dell LCDs. One buddy would order a Dell system with LCD, another would get an LCD that's bad for cheap, say the monitor was broken, ship it back and get like a $50 17" LCD.
Personally I wouldn't try it, you risk screwing yourself and someone else. But man... 1024x768 would suck What are their terms as far as "breaking" the LCD. Cuz you could just bash it in if all they're concerned about is it being broken.
