| Older Laptop Needs a Newer Drive
I have an older Gateway Solo http://support.gateway.com/s/Mobile/.../P2500nv.shtml
that's in need of a larger, faster hard drive and would like some advice.
According to Gateway I can't use a drive larger than 30 GB but that's pretty much all the advice I can get from them. Right now I'm considering a 30 GB (that's more than big enough - 20 would be fine), 5400rpm drive with an 8mb buffer. You can see the model I'm looking at here: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...146-032&depa=0
Does any one have any experience with upgrading this model of laptop? I'd like to get the fastest thing I can get for this little lappie for under $85 as I'm running Win2k Pro and VB.NET 2003 on it. (Yeah, it's a little slow but it's plenty workable.)
Right now a newer faster laptop is out of the question so don't bother suggesting it unless you're willing to donate one to the cause. :)
Thanks for the suggestions!

I went ahead and got a Fujisti from Newegg. I know it's not the fastest drive but it was within the budget, according to everything I've read it should be compatible with the laptop, and it has a 3 year warranty as opposed to the 1 year warranty all the other drive manufacturers are providing.
Thanks anyway! |

The Fujisti's in the laptop and working just fine. It really gave this old laptop some new life. For those considering a new laptop hard drive this is the quietest laptop hard drive I've ever used. The Toshiba's and Hitachi's are much louder than this one is.
I don't miss any of that clicking at all. |

The 5400 rpm models only seem to have a 1 year warranty. Must be because they cause more heat.
I just bought my first laptop and am thinking about upgrading my hard drive. I'm trying to figure out what interface drive I need to get. Do laptop drives come with different interfaces. I noticed newegg shows some that are Ata-6, ata-5 and ata-100.
Do I need to be carefull about that? |

Okay, ATA 100 and ATA 5 are the same thing by a different name. ATA133 and ATA 6 are also the same thing.
Hard drives are supposed to be backwards compatible with older machines but I've found that most laptops are very propeitary in nature so upgrading one can be a real gamble. The thing you'll likely need to worry about most though it capacity. Some laptops won't take drives bigger than a certain size and you'll need to check with the manufacturer of your laptop to find that information out.
Wish I could be of more help but I a bit new to the upgrade of laptops myself.
