Have you done a virus scan ???? Probably best to format and re-install the OS. Start from new.

I totally agree... As long as you have the restore discs, this should be easy.

Beware - some compaqs store their recovery information on the laptop hard drive. If you format the drive with a third party program, it may erase your recovery partition too and make it so you have no way to get windows back without buying a copy or calling Compaq to order some recovery CD's.

I have run a virus scan and found no more trace of the sasser virus.I've done a system recovery and still have the same results.
When i bought this off of the auction it was suppose to have a 20 gig hard drive instead when i received it, it has a 4 gig hd.
The specs are 1.2 GHz processor,4 gig hd,256 ram,cd burner dvd combo drive and floppy.
Everything seems to work fine as far as the floppy and cd dvd. However i have noticed any of the programs i open on it stops responding. This is with a recovery. Don't seem to be overheated. It just shuts off when i hit the power button it turns right back on.
Thank you for your replies, any help is muchly appreciated!

I hate to say it, but you may have been blessed with a lemon. Too bad you can't even grind this type up to make a pleasant beverage for the hot summer days, though.

Ooops forgot something, don't know if this has anything to do with it.After the system recovery i noticed there isn't any cd burning software installed.Think it's possible i have the wrong recovery disks? I've always bought Compaq and any system i've owned with a burner always had the burner software preinstalled.
