Our 3yr old NEC Sxi laptop, which was stored on its side, fell flat on the book-shelf it was stored on. Now we we have a blank screen when we turn it on. Tried the recovery disk w/o any results. Suggestions??
Shine a bright light into the screen at a slight angle while the laptop is running. If you can see a shadow of the image that should be displayed then the backlight isn't working any more. A competent shop should be able to replace the backlight tube or inverter for a decent price.
Also, try cycling through the CRT/LCD key a few times. Maybe it got jammed when it fell. Or hook a regular monitor up to it and see if you can get a picture when you hit the CRT/LCD key.

Thank you for your good ideas... which I tried w/o success. I should have also said that the laptop is not booting up... no sounds other than the fan coming on for a minute or so; then the only indication is the power on "green" light. When I put the recovery disk in - it spins up initially - then back to silence with no other clues (that I can see).
Looks to me like something got disconnected maybe.
