currykarpal, what kind of "black plug" is it? S-video? There are all sorts of black plugs it can be. Can you take a picture of the plug and the port it plugs into? |

| Connecting laptop to TV
Hi Everybody,
Googling and searching the discussion boards on connecting my laptop(Compaq Presario 2182US) to Apex Tv with S Video to RCA Adapter, I was finally able to get the display of my laptop to TV. I have scratched my head for hours to get this.Everything I did seemed to be right except that it was not working. Here is what happened.
After making the connections (S video of laptop to RCA of TV with an "S video to RCA Adapter") I hit Fn + F5 on laptop, my laptop screen would flicker for a second and I see nothing on TV. Later I connected the RCA cable to video port of my VCR I was able to switch the display from my laptop as I could see a blank screen on laptop when I hit Fn + F5. Then I unplugged the cable from VCR & connected the RCA cable to Video port of TV and was able to get the display. I still have to do this every time I want to connect my laptop to TV.
I do not know exact technical deal behind this but my guess is my TV is not giving some hand shake signals to laptop which recognizes it as an external display. I came to this conclusion as the same laptop works fine without changing any settings when i connected to my friends sony tv.
Hope this helps & saves some time for others who are facing similar kind of problems.
Thanks for all your help |

hi, rvbabu
Not sure what the problem is as you are getting a display? it sounds as if you haven't checked the cycle present in the display switching, http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...product=374007
but i tend to sort everything out in display properties first.
Also, there is no 'handshake' present with Svideo (unlike USB for example) as the picture info only travels one way. It is more a case of setting the PC up to send and then having the TV on the correct channel.
Oh and Black and white images are to do with PAL (europe) and NTSC (USA) design - there is lots of info kicking about on this subject. http://www.videohelp.com is always a first port of call.
Any more Qus i'll see what i can do.

| Monitor is either black or white/and or jumping
Thanks you all in advance for any help you may provide.
I have two laptops
one is a hp dv 5000 and the 2nd is hp dv1000, both have expansion ports for a all in one media cable.....has s-video, audio cables...etc
With that in mind, I have a fairly new TV, A samsung, that has a s-video spot. When I hook up my laptop I not only get a black and white screen, but the picture jumps almost like that tracking is off (vcr tapes). When I hook up the 2nd laptop using the same wires, I get a black and white screen. Among HP support telling me my laptop doesnt support the tv which is a year older than my laptop, and spending 60 bucks for support that didnt help, I am finally at my wits end.
I have tried adjusting the display properties, and as far as I know the drivers have been updated.....or my moniter manufacturer is not listed.
IOf anyone knows how to rectify this issue, i would be a happy man.
thanks again |

S-Video is composed of two signals, a chrominance (color) signal and a luminance (brightness) signal. If the chrominance signal is missing, you will get a "black and white" picture.
Check your laptop's video out settings and make sure you are outputting S-Video and not composite video.
You may also have a bad cable. |

where do i check the video out settings, and how do i check to see if its outputting s-video or composite video. the media in one cable is pretty new, as well as the s-video cable. So I just need to know how to set it up correctly.
thanks |

I have the same exact problem! Did you find a solution? I have checked all display settings. I used a Dell to connect...and that worked! Obviously it's an HP issue...not an s-video or Samsung issue! |

After trying many of your suggestions, and by troubleshooting different things, i finally got it to work on both my laptops for my TV......anyone who has this problem of a black and white screen or a jumping screen should contact me at crackzilla79@msn.com.
Unfortunately, I can't remember how to do this exactly since it has been a week or so, but anyone interested in that info, I will do my best to make sure you have the results i got, as well as the procedure in how to fix this problem or shall i say setting in the display prooperties. Manny, just give me a shout and I will email you and all who are needing this info.
Thanks again for all you help. |

Glad to hear you got it fixed. For the benefit of others, could you post a quick explanation of what you did? Was it in your display properties? |
