I took a screenshot for everyone's benefit... this is in the TV Settings option in Nvidia's control panel. On ATI cards it should be something similar.
You have to make sure your TV signal is the correct format (e.g. NTSC vs PAL) and the output type is correct (e.g. composite vs S-video).
I tested this on my TV and indeed you do get a black and white picture if you are using S-video cables and the output type is set to composite. Normally, a setting of AUTO will automagically sense the type of connection and select the correct output format, but you may need to force it if the auto-sense doesn't work right. |

Thanks for this thread! I had the s-video displaying as black and white problem. crackzilla79's post lead me to the TV option and I found the out put was formated PAL when I switched it to NTSC M color was restored.
hp dv5000 with ATI Mobility Radeon Xpress 200
I found this under the displays tab, TV then click on the TV title,
turns out it is a non-standard button. Changed from PAL to NTSC

| New user-Please help
Hello everyone,
I am new to transferring my laptop display to TV. Can someone please tell me what are the basic steps needed for this?
1. I have Compaq Presario notebook with S-video plug.
2. I have Sylvani 19" TV. I do not see any plug specifically marked as S-Video on my TV. However, I do see one marked as simply "Video". It is a one-pin plug and right now it is connected to my DVD player.
Can I still accomplish this? Thanks for your help.

A one -pin video plug is composite video. This is not compatable with S-Video with out some adapter. |

Steve Hansen,
Thanks for your reply. I do see a S-Video plug on my cable box which is hooked to my TV. In case I do have to buy an adapter, can you please suggest any good adapters that can serve my purpose.
Apart from adapter, what other things would I need?
Sorry for silly questions but I am very new to this area so.
Thanks

That s-video on your cable box is a line out, not in: useless for what you want to accomplish.
What you need is an s-video cable on one end, and RCA cables on the other end. At the risk of being compared to Hawaii's favorite meat, here's a link to what you need, at the best prices I've found on the net. (The extra 3.5mm and two extra RCAs allow you to hook up the sound to the TV/Stereo Receiver, but you can easily leave the computer sound hooked up to it's speakers.)
It seems to be OOS now, but you can check out what it looks like and get it someplace else. (cables2go, Radio Shack etc.) http://www.buyextras.com/corcavitosau.html I am not affiliated with buyextras.com, but I am a very satisfied customer who's getting tired of being hosed by the Shack.

Hi LeftCoast,
Thanks a lot for your help!! As you suggestedI got the S-Video to RCA cable and got the video from laptop to TV.
However, how do I get the Audio from my laptop to TV? In short, how do I use the extra 3.5 mm?
Thanks

No problem, patkt.
To get the audio, the 3.5 goes into where your (computer) speakers are plugged in, then the RCAs go into stereo inputs either on: a) a stereo tv or b) a stereo receiver/boombox. This audio device must, of course, have RCA inputs; red for the right channel and white for the left channel (the yellow "RCA" is for the video feed). |
