Afer about 2 hours of investigation under a magnifier, I was able to locate two(2) components that were bad. "completely blown off the board". 1 - Capacitor & 1 - Fuse (bothe surface mount. They are (Fuse L1013 & Capcitor C206). For the fuse I just created a solder bridge to create continuity and for the capacitor, I removed one from another different brand board I had laying around).
This worked!, I am sending this post on the NC6000 in question. If you need more info on exactly where the components are located then please post a reply.
Hope I was of some help.

Please explain where they are. Thanks :-)

The printing on my chip states "TCPA SECURITYB" Undo the screw, remove and toss the chip, and unplug the leads from the battery. Also pull the hard drive, battery and unplug the AC adapter. Set the laptop aside and go have a smoke. Come back later (I waited 15 minutes) and plug in the AC and press the power button (do not plug the battery leads back in or reinsert anything else, just press the power button) This will flash the BIOS and ask you if you want to save. Save the settings and power back down. Put the laptop back together and enjoy, password free.

Hi I have the same problem as Joeshannellie. Originally the hard drive died. So I replaced the hard drive, had the problem of master password, disconnected the battery, and set the date and time, and what I thought, reset the password, both, to nothing. So installed operating system, winxp on the laptop, everything worked fine. However my friend brought it back and said it just won't boot anymore, it worked for a few days ok.
Now the damned thing is when booting, it just goes into a flashing cursor, and that is it. If I press F10 to get into the bios it asks for the password again, and nothing works, no four zero's as someone suggested, nothing. I couldn't find any "TCPA SecurityB" chip anywhere in the laptop. Can someone help with a little bit more specific information, like precise location of security chip if it exists? Please Help!

Fixed my nc6000 no boot problem! Loose LCD cable!

Hope somebody can use this info. My problem was the laptop would not boot. When you would press the power button, the keyboard lights up, the fan would kick on, the power light, then the orange charging light would come on. Ten seconds or so later, it would just die. It happened everytime I tried to turn it on.

Bought a replacement motherboard, but after installing it, it still did the same exact thing. The last thing I checked was when I disconnected the LCD cable from the board I was able to boot up multiple times. So I take apart the LCD and checked the inverter then the cable and found the cable was not fully seated on the LCD connection. After reseating it and taping it securely to prevent future dislodgings, I turned it one and voila! It booted up.

Spent a long time trying to fix this (2 months) and it turned up to be something simple like a loose LCD cable. I'm starting to loose my techiness.

So, before you buy any parts for this bastard laptop from HP/Compaq, check your LCD cable.

I bought a very fine point battery soldering iron ($20 from dick smith), it had a much finer point than my weller temp controlled station. Using a high power magnifier and a steady hand, I carefully re-soldered each leg of the max1987 chip, reassembled and all was okay for about a day, then the same problem. After pulling it apart again I was looking for why this chip is breaking connections and found that the lcd hinge closest to the heat sink was very stiff. It was so stiff it was causing the case to distort when opening and closing the lid. With the screen removed I carefully placed a little penetrating oil on the hinge and moved it through its full travel to loosen it. It is still firm but not as stiff as it was. I have again resoldered the max1987 chip and reassembled with everything okay again. Hopefully this time it will last.

Mine had the same problem, It would boot but only one light would come on and the fan would speed up and then the system would shut down...

Pressure on the fan assembly would cause it to boot up ok, for a few minutes then it would lock up.

So, I stripped the computer all the way down (the Maxim 1987 chip is UNDERNEATH the motherboard, in the corner where the heatsink screws to the board.

Also, my hinge on that side was really tight... So I used some tri-flow on it and moved it around for a while (did both hinges at the same time) they are still stiff, but better than they were.

Finally I found the chip, (my youngest daughter helped me find it.) I then got my trusty soldering iron... Tip was WAY too big... Borrowed a friends... His was too big too...

Went to the garage for my "old" iron. It had a smaller tip, and was adjustable down to 15 watts. (better for board repair, less heat is good). I then filed down the tip with my dremel tool until it was very sharp. Then touched each prong with the iron, (you can see the solder move almost instantly when you touch it) Make sure you let it cool between as you don't want to fry the chip. I also took off the metal bracket around the main chip as it was so close to the Maxim 1987 chip that my iron couldn't get in there without removing that...

Before I started I looked and looked, and couldn't see any not connected... But, figured since I was in there might as well try it... Laptop was dead anyway...

After soldering I put it all back together. (tip, the little ribbon holders are easy to remove with a small flathead on each side, the clip stays on the thin cable just pulls out when the brackets move up about 1/16th...)

After it was all together, I fired it up, and it worked perfect. I have started and restarted about 20 times, since yesterday when I did it. It seems to be working fine!

Thanks for the tips guys. I took a picture of the chip on the board if anyone wants to see it. (its at home, but I can upload later if anyones interested)...

Remarkable Toubleshooting

After all this time, it's good to know what that problem was. Our nc6000's are all gone now, but I remember the problem well. After the 6th occurence, amid much skepticism, I had sent one back to HP along with a description and after three months, they said they had finally had the problem occur. But they never said what it was. You are some remarkably good troubleshooters and repairers.

hi, i'd like to check those pictures..

mine still "works" after a little pressure on the fan assembly screw, it last for several days in a row.. but I'm tired of doing so.. I can't move it freely, so is not a "portable" computer..

thanks in advance..

Another Solution

First sorry for my english, i'm french, and doing my best but sometimes the best i can is not efficient... ;-)

I've shutdown my nc6000 yesterday normally ( no crash / shock etc... )
This morning, blue light / orange light / fan running for 10 / 15 seconds then power down.

I've dropped the battery / harddrive , replugged all : nothing happened.

I've taken a screwdriver and go !

- Test on rtc battery : 2,8 v for 3 normally : no problem
- Test on all cable : Video / Power / Fan etc : Nothing

Rescrewed all ...

And i've found some post that said to press all keys on the keyboard, i've searched which were the good ones :

Finally : just press the 6 keys on the top left ( insert / home / pause / syst. / num lock / attn ) and press On : It work ...

nc 6000

Does anyone have a blue print / component diagram of this unit? This would make it easier to identify the suspect components.
