what is the tpm chip? Did you just pull off the cable to the LED board?

Download the service manual to see which parts I am talking about. The LED board is the board that contains the power switch and the TPM chip goes on this (optional chip not all NC6000's have this)

Question If I Might Add... Compaq NC6000

Needless to say, here is yet another person with the same problem - BIOS is locked out by an Admin Pwd and the user does not know what it is.

Removing the HD does not solve this problem, as I know many of you have already stated.

I have read where you have talked about changing something on the MB. Can someone please clarify that for me? Do I have to remove the entire bottom to get to this part? Will it be an obvious looking part?

I'm sooo confused , I really hate dealing with laptops.

    All help is appreciated.

    Thanks,
    RaeTech

You don't need to change the motherboard, but the . The harddrive will have to be changed if it's locked. You get to the motherboard by removing the keyboard. The part to change is probrably the curcuitboard attached to the motherboard, but first try resetting the bios by unplugging the cmos battery(you'll see it once the keyboard's removed)

Hi everyone, well i have found this thread most helpfull with my laptop as ive just replaced the hardrive and rebuilt my system. i have one small issue though.

i have downloaded all the latest drivers and have installed them but still have 1 thing hanging out in device manager which i have no idea which driver it requires.

it says other devices. then says base system device. and in properties is says PCI bus 2.device 6. function 2

does anyone know what device this is and what driver i need to install it, when asked to search on internet for driver it comes back saying it cant find one.

    thanks in advance. matt

I have the exact same problem as all of you... I got a password stuck on this laptop..

I ordered a new LED board to see if that will fix the problem, it should be here next week. Where exactly is the TPM chip on the LED board? I've looked everywhere for it and I cant find it.

Does anyone have any other ideas on what I should do about this?

    Vapor Matt,
    You mentioned a hardware problem:
    <<
it says other devices. then says base system device. and in properties is says PCI bus 2.device 6. function 2>>

I have exactly the same problem. Can anyone advise us both how to sort this?

AND - is there a way of getting this forum to send an e-mail when an answer has been posted to a thread one is following. It took me ages to find my way back to this one!

    vapor matt:
    - try booting with a Knoppix Live CD maby it will recognize the hardware you need drivers for in windows.

    swk:
    - yes it is working withouth a hdd drive and it`s eaven able to boot a bootable CD (XP install / Linux Live CD).
    - you might be having another problem , maby hardware one if the laptop isn`t showing anything on the lcd screen.

    ddclutch
    - the forum will send you an email from time to time saying that new info has been posted on this forum, at least that`s how i'm getting back here from time to time

    the unknow piece of hardware

it is the Infinion board, pry up the cover with the power switch on it. Just below the the left most hinge, there is a board about 3/8 x 1 inch. one screw on the right. it is basiclly an onboard "SecureID" key fob. had the SB replaced on one of the 6220's here and it was an added bonus.

    HP nc6000 bios lock

I too bought a the same laptop HP nc6000 and it had a bios password and the trick you are speaking of worked for me , I simply removed the power battery and then changed the hard drive and uplugged the plug thats plugged into the board , which by the way can be reached by lifting up the key board , and i waited about 15 minutes then turned the unit on without the battery and without replugging the plug that i unplugged under the key board, once i turned the unit on i could see it performing the memory count , i already had a Windows XP disc loaded in the cd rom so it booted right from the disc , i finised installing windows and replugged the wire andi was done .........

I also have been having all the above problems on this model. I have called HP and all they have to say is remove the RTC battery and everything will be reset. Wrong! It does not work no matter how I try it. Where is the passwords actually stored? If I replaced the power button board with the little security module on it would that do away with the password problems. If anyone knows please reply soon. I am about ready to pitch this Laptop into the trash.

I am having a administrator password problem. When I press F10 for setup it says entering setup but it never goes on into the cmos. A adminstrator password thing pops up. Does anyone have a clue how this can be reolved. Unplugging the rtc battery does not help me Please someone reply and say they have found a solution.

Talking Here is your fix, I just did it!

The CMOS battery is located in the CDROM bay. The leads from the battery (black&red) run up the motherboard and plug in next to the ribbon cable for the touchpad. The password is stored on the small (1x1.5") chip that is plugged in next to the modem. The printing on my chip states "TCPA SECURITYB" Undo the screw, remove and toss the chip, and unplug the leads from the battery. Also pull the hard drive, battery and unplug the AC adapter. Set the laptop aside and go have a smoke. Come back later (I waited 15 minutes) and plug in the AC and press the power button (do not plug the battery leads back in or reinsert anything else, just press the power button) This will flash the BIOS and ask you if you want to save. Save the settings and power back down. Put the laptop back together and enjoy, password free.

Same boot problem as this poster (not password issue)

My Compaq nc6000 also started behaving this way all of a sudden. It occasionally boots, but it always takes several tries now. Usually the blue WLAN light and the orange light come on, along with the fan, then after a second it shuts off. The green "power on" light does not come on in this situation. After several tries, it will boot (the green power on light turns on). At that point, everything is fine and it runs flawlessly.

It has been suggested that this might indicate that the hard drive is marginal, and is not always responding to the initial hardware detection. I'm not sure I believe this, because of the behavior of the power on light.

I have the exact same problem, I called technical support and they said to disconnect all power and hold on the power button for 30 seconds, but that doesn't do anything. i have a feeling it might be that the ram chip suddenly fried or something like that, Did anyone with this problem replace their ram ?
