I too bought a the same laptop HP nc6000 and it had a bios password and the trick you are speaking of worked for me , I simply removed the power battery and then changed the hard drive and uplugged the plug thats plugged into the board , which by the way can be reached by lifting up the key board , and i waited about 15 minutes then turned the unit on without the battery and without replugging the plug that i unplugged under the key board, once i turned the unit on i could see it performing the memory count , i already had a Windows XP disc loaded in the cd rom so it booted right from the disc , i finised installing windows and replugged the wire andi was done ......... |

I also have been having all the above problems on this model. I have called HP and all they have to say is remove the RTC battery and everything will be reset. Wrong! It does not work no matter how I try it. Where is the passwords actually stored? If I replaced the power button board with the little security module on it would that do away with the password problems. If anyone knows please reply soon. I am about ready to pitch this Laptop into the trash. |

I am having a administrator password problem. When I press F10 for setup it says entering setup but it never goes on into the cmos. A adminstrator password thing pops up. Does anyone have a clue how this can be reolved. Unplugging the rtc battery does not help me Please someone reply and say they have found a solution. |

| Here is your fix, I just did it!
The CMOS battery is located in the CDROM bay. The leads from the battery (black&red) run up the motherboard and plug in next to the ribbon cable for the touchpad. The password is stored on the small (1x1.5") chip that is plugged in next to the modem. The printing on my chip states "TCPA SECURITYB" Undo the screw, remove and toss the chip, and unplug the leads from the battery. Also pull the hard drive, battery and unplug the AC adapter. Set the laptop aside and go have a smoke. Come back later (I waited 15 minutes) and plug in the AC and press the power button (do not plug the battery leads back in or reinsert anything else, just press the power button) This will flash the BIOS and ask you if you want to save. Save the settings and power back down. Put the laptop back together and enjoy, password free. |

| Same boot problem as this poster (not password issue)
My Compaq nc6000 also started behaving this way all of a sudden. It occasionally boots, but it always takes several tries now. Usually the blue WLAN light and the orange light come on, along with the fan, then after a second it shuts off. The green "power on" light does not come on in this situation. After several tries, it will boot (the green power on light turns on). At that point, everything is fine and it runs flawlessly.
It has been suggested that this might indicate that the hard drive is marginal, and is not always responding to the initial hardware detection. I'm not sure I believe this, because of the behavior of the power on light. Quote: |
