Now i have the stangest thing. I was reading this post and a lot of them have the same problems. Now i have a NC4010 that's the one with no optical drive. My CN4010 was also HD protected, so i wanted to boot my NC4010 with a external usb 2.0 drive ... and that was succesfull. I formated the 60 GB drive and i wanted to install XP. I deleted all the partitions an created two new ones.
The setup was running fast by copying the files to the HD, but at 20% het told that he cold not copy some files, ?? Very strange, because the disc i used was okay!
So i wanted to look in the bios for the setup, but it asked me for a admin pass... what i dont have. This is the last time that i bought a computer from the internet... so i screwed the NC4010 open and search for the CMOS battery. I found it and took it for an hour. replace the whole thing and build it again. that seems not too help. Now i have a empty HD that i cant install and a bios that i cant acces. Can someone help me please because i bought this thing for my girlfriend as a present.

How To Reset HP nc6000 BIOS (By The Book)

After reading the following thread I found myself going to HP and the following link to see what the service manual had to say (even though it is claimed that the manual says nothing about resetting the BIOS Administrative Password). On initial search of the "book" I noted there was no obvious entry for this topic (nothing under BIOS at least). All you have to do is take a look at the topic "Password, Clearing" and viola!

Here is a cut and paste from page 1-13 of the manual you will find at his address:

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c00291000/c00291000.pdf?jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN

Here is the text for those who don't want to bother finding yourself copied directly from the HP document itself:

**********************************

1.3 Clearing a Password

If the notebook you are servicing has an unknown password,

follow these steps to clear the password. These steps also

clear CMOS:

1. Prepare the notebook for disassembly (refer to Section

“5.3 Preparing the Notebook for Disassembly” for more

information).

2. Remove the real time clock (RTC) battery (refer to Section

“5.20 RTC Battery”).

3. Wait approximately five minutes.

4. Replace the RTC battery and reassemble the notebook.

5. Connect AC power to the notebook. Do not reinsert any

battery packs at this time.

6. Turn on the notebook.

All passwords and all CMOS settings have been cleared.

**********************************

Now I can hear you asking...Okay! But does it work?

YES. I just did it with one of my nc6000 and it worked like a charm.

Remember...it's not that you have to know all of the answers...it that you have to know where to go to get the answers! That is the key!!

Fly low, beat the radar and may the wind at your back not be your own...

Hi Folks,

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I just exerienced the exact same problem, and the HP technician that serviced it ended up having to replace the motherboard because it was faulty. Fortunately mine was still under warrantee .

Judging by the number of people with the same problem, and the fact that the first replacement board the technician tried was also faulty , apparently it's a production fault. I only hope that the replacement board doesn't end up having the same problem again after the warrantee expires.

Hope this answers your questions.

Daniel

I have exactly the same problem. Can anyone advise us both how to sort this?
Has anybody found an answer to this one yet? Besides the Base System Device, I also have another device listed as Unknown and located at "on Intel(R) 82801DBM LPC Interface Controller - 24CC"

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Daniel

Synaptics touchpad driver download at the link above - may resolve the Intel error.

Additional NC6000 drivers for download at:

Yes, that did the trick; thanks
I had overlooked that driver because for some reason it is listed in the Software section, instead of in the Drivers section. I purposely didn't install all of the software, because like most pre-installed systems a lot of the extra software isn't really necessary and only takes up extra space/resources.

THIS IS THE SOLUTION, ALL THE CREDIT GOES TO "FIRSTFLIGHTMEDIA", I PERFORMED HIS DIRECTIONS ON A COMPAQ NC4010 AND ALSO A NC6000 AND IT WORKED ON BOTH. I was with all of you, lost clueless on this issue and have been thinking about it for 3 months now. I have tried removing the security chip (tpm module) and have even pulled the RTC cable on the battery but nothing worked. I BELIEVE WHEN YOU DISASSEMBLE THE LAPTOP THE TRICK IS, AFTER YOU ARE DONE WAITING 5 MINUTES THAT YOU PLUG IT IN TOO THE AC ADAPTER AND LEAVE THE BATTERY PACK OUT. LISTED BELOW ARE THE EXACT STEPS THAT I TOOK AND HAD SUCCESS ON BOTH, AGAIN ALL THE CREDIT GOES TO FIRSTFLIGHTMEDIA, THANKS AGAIN.

NC4010/NC6000
- Remove the keyboard, Harddrive, Battery
- find the connecter to the RTC battery that pluggs into the motherboard (which is a Red and black wire, the only ones), this is located right in front of the touchpad.
- Remove this connector using a needle nose plyers and if you can sneak the needle nose under the casing and pull the RTC battery out (i did that just to be safe, i am 90% sure though that you can just unplug it from the motherboard).
- wait 5 minutes
- Reconnect the RTC battery to the Motherboard
- Screw in the keyboard and harddrive (i am not sure if the harddrive gets grounded by the screw but just do it too be safe)
- Plug the laptop into the ac adapter
- MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT PUT THE BATTERY PACK IN
- Turn the laptop on and access the bios by using F10

I did the same procedure for the NC6000 except i also removed the CD-rom

- I know my instructions are lengthy but after 3 months of thinking (and being in the IT field) i feel that i might as well post the exact procedure too make sure it works.

Post responses as i am curious as if this works for everyone. You should all have sucess if you follow the procedure exactly.
