Thanks for the reply, Dhakir. However, I haven't got a clue as to why the hard drive does not release. I removed both screws, pulled on the tab from left to right so the hard drive disconnects from the laptop and pulled the tab as to release the hard drive to try and bring it out but still no luck. I think it is jammed somehow.. haven't the faintest of ideas..

Edit: I managed to release the hard drive with the use of a pair of pliers . The only thing now is, I need to get the hard drive out of the holder/case (metal casing) but there are 2 pins holding the hard drive in place. I'm not sure as to how to remove the pins.. The service manual calls them "M2.0 x 10.0 alignment pins". It says I need a 4.0mm socket, but I don't know what that is.. Anybody know what to do? Thanks in advance.

Pins? Do you mean screws? Mine had 4 screws on the sides, of different sizes. I needed a really small screwdriver for the rear ones and a slightly larger one for the front ones. Then I had to carefully remove the 80-pin (I suppose there are 80 of them) connector from the back by pulling it while trying not to bend too much the casing. I used some strength at this point but after the first time you get used to the amount needed. The metal casing has a black plastic connector for the HD pins and two metal pins which stick to the laptop bay, but I never really touched those, nor did I need to remove the metallized plastic around the drive, which has the silver tab.
Hope that helps...

It helps alot, thanks. I was struggling to remove the pins (screws) at first but I soon managed it and pulled the connector out with ease. Thank you very much.

To sum up, my suggestions to anyone with the "orange light" problem would be:

- Remove the keyboard
- Remove the LED board (unscrew 2 black screws on the back of the laptop)
- Remove the memory and keyboard plates
- Push down hard the lower left corner of the fan assembly (the thick metal around the fan)
- Try booting it on while pushing this part down

If it works, release the fan assembly and if the screen goes off, then you have to make sure this part will somehow remain pressed to avoid the problem from happening. In theory, screwing really hard the keyboard screw close to the fan assembly should do, but not always.

I think it's really a shame for hp that this notebook, which seems quite sturdy, has such a problem with something that's not even broken. No wonder so many people sell this laptop cheap on eBay...
My NC6000 just did the same thing, however I have to press
real hard on the keyboard in the area of the lower left of the
fan assembly and as soon as I relieve pressure it loses its mind.

I guess it is new MB time or ?

I have a strange problem with high CPU utilization on my NC6000. I have the latest drivers and BIOS installed, 1GB RAM, and a 7200 RPM HDD.

Anything I do on the laptop, whether it's XP or Ubuntu, the CPU goes to 90%+ utilization. I've disabled everything I could on XP. Is it possible that the MB is bad?

Thank you for any input you can offer,
Mr Mister

Hello people! Just registered here to bring you this "update".
DISCLAIMER: I'm swedish so please forgive me for not using the right technical tems in this post.

I recently got a nc6000 from a customer of mine who got tired of not being able to boot it correctly. Now, after reading through this thread, I found a way to get the b*stard starting AND staying alive! Now I know that this will probably not help 100% of the nc6000 (and later nc model) users out there, but it did the trick for me.

Like so many of you already said, applying preasure to the lower left side of the fan assembly made you boot the laptop up. Have you tried PULLING the fan assembly's lower left upwards? I used an aprox. 5-6mm high "nut" (you know, bolts and nuts??) and placed it underneath the fan assembly's lower left corner and tightened the screws of it hard. By doing this I have been able to keep the machine "alive" for two days straight now and I've been able to carry it with me without it dying for me, even "dropping" it on the table. Only problem is that you MAY have to open the laptop and re-tighten the screws once in a while to keep it going.

Anyway, my problem now is that when I carry it the touchpad goes haywire. Anyone else that have the same problem?

About the "driver bay lock", have you tried password@ changer (free downloadable program)?

Try this all!!!

I have had this same problem with my nc6000 for about 3 months now. It boots when you press on the right hand side of the laptop, below the keyboard where the Pentium and WinXP stickers are. Whenever it did boot it would hang randomly after about 10 or 15 mins use. Weirdly if I booted into Safe Mode it would not hang - even after hours of being turned on - so I thought it must be software related and formatted my machine. *DON'T DO THIS* It won't work. The solution that worked for me is below.

On the good advice of another user (Dhakir) on the forum below:

http://www.techimo.com/forum/showthread.php?t=126058&page=8

- Remove the keyboard
- Remove the LED board (unscrew 2 black screws on the back of the laptop)
- Remove the memory and keyboard plates
- Push down hard the lower left corner of the fan assembly (the thick metal around the fan)
- Try booting it on while pushing this part down
- I then unscrewed the screw at the top left of the fan casing and then screwed it down tight.

Laptop has booted successfully now 30 times in a row without an issue.
In the middle of re-installing XP as I write this.

Hope this works for some of you out there.

I have all of the above problems with a NC6000 that I am fixing. I over came the BIOS/CMOS problem with the method described, undoing the keyboard, removing the lead to rhe CMOS (Black and red wires) for 10 minutes.

I also have the boot issue and hanging. For now the pressing down works but its not really a long term solution.

FOr the hanging, I removed the battery and run on AC with the RMclock & FAN6000 running, I also disabled the USB (which didnt help) BUT I now have a USB memory stick inserted in the top USB slot and it seems to have done the trick, I've run the system for two days including reboots and it doesn't hang.... not sure how to explain it.

For anybody still having the "hang" issue, the memory stick in the USB slot has done the trick for me. Have had no issues for a couple of days. If I could resolve the boot issue I will be delighted

USB port trick still working

For the boot issue, I did the following: (as mentioned above)

- Remove the keyboard
- Remove the LED board (unscrew 2 black screws on the back of the laptop)
- Remove the memory and keyboard plates
- Push down hard the lower left corner of the fan assembly (the thick metal around the fan)
- Try booting it on while pushing this part down
- I then unscrewed the screw at the top left of the fan casing and then screwed it down tight.

However, screwing down the top left screw didnt work so I replaced it with a slightly longer screw, if its too long it pushes the fan casing up and you can't reassemble but a slightly longer screw seems to exert enough pressure to allow the computer to boot.

All working now!
