mobile to laptop internet

this shouldn't be a complicated thing. all the plans by all the providers and all the people that know nothing about the product they are trying to selling, make this a difficult thing to accomplish.

right now, i am with tmobile. it appears that i would need some sort of internet package ($30 a month) for unlimited internet service (yet they charge you 20 cents a minute for the call). The booth dwellers said all i would need would be a t-zone package, for $5 a month. and ofcourse, with both of these, i need the data cable to hook my phone up to my laptop. and i dont expect anyone to know what i am talking about with tzones unless you have tmobile.

if you dont have tmobile, have you connected to the internet on your laptop using your cell as a wireless modem? please give the details in the process (plan, phone, provider, how you set up the connection on your laptop, etc)

I use Sprint PCS to connect my laptop to the the internet. It is pretty straightforward. I bought the cable and software at Radio Shack for $40. I plug the cable into the phone and the other end into the USB port on the computer. The computer recognized it as a modem and asked for drivers, which came with the cable. After that, it set up a network connection icon for the modem and all I do is double click on it and it does the handshake with the cellphone. I typically get a connection of 230 kbps, but see a real data rate between 150 and 200 kpbs. Nonetheless it is way faster than a dial up modem.

Thumbs up

I have a Motorola V710 from Verizon. It connects to my laptop via Bluetooth and shows up as a modem. I dial #777, use mycellphonenumber@vzw3g.com as a username and vzw as the password. I get around 75kbps speed that way and it costs me $5/month and whatever airtime minutes I use. Verizon offers plans with much faster speeds, but you pay through the nose for them.

Lets just hope that cities continue installing free wireless network access I know downtown San Francisco has it as do some parts of Los Angeles.

Well I am on a family plan. My wife, her parents and I are all share 2000 minutes a month with unlimited internet for $120/month. Sprint is offering 700 minutes per month for $50 plus $15 for PCS Vision (their internet and picture service). The also have a plan depends on how much you use your phone per month. For example if you use less than 300 minutes, they bill you $35, 300 to 400 minutes $40, 401 to 500 minutes $45 and more than 500 runs $0.10/minute. Again PCS Vision is $15 a month.

Last time I checked, this is the only true Internet plan T-Mobile offers.

http://www.t-mobile.com/plans/default.asp?tab=internet

It is $30 per month for data services, but voice calls are billed at 20 cents per minute.

I never inquired about voice, as all I was needing was data when inquiring. Have you asked a service rep if you can combine the data package with a traditional calling package on a single cell phone?

yeah, i have the internet package as well as phone service *now* when i bought the phone all they told me i needed was tzones, and i protested that i think i needed another package. either way, not happy. i have a few days to get this thing exchanged, and i may very well go to sprint, since that is also what a friend uses. tmobile is having me set up a 33600 modem connection. lame

Before switching to Sprint make sure they cover the areas you need most. Sprint coverage is pretty good along major interstates and in large metro areas, but get too far off the beaten path and you will not have signal.
