Dell 8600: second hard drive option?

I am told I can add a second hard drive to my Inspiron 8600; there is an empty bay. The existing drive is a 5400 RPM model. My spare is a 4200 RPM variety. Will adding this hard drive for storage use only (no operating system or program files) negatively affect my laptop's performance?

It will shorten the battery life, but it will not hinder your computers performance in any other way.
