In laptops, I stay away from ones with eraser head mouses and floppy drives that connect to the laptop via a cable when you what to use the CD or DVD ROM. I personally don't like these things in laptops. |

Swamp-fox make sure U let us know what U think of Toshiba's service when it is required. Did that Toshiba arrive with a OS CD or a Quickrestore CD?
I'd suggest this one IF anyone else is currently look'n 2 purchase a laptop. U can get a lower end processor IF'n U R look'n at a tight budget. http://www.directplus.compaq.com/def...D=19701&SBLID=

uh oh Kahuna I don't like the sound of that question. Are you implying I'm gonna need some service soon?? I haven't even got it outta the box yet. Seem's I read on here quite a few people recommending the toshiba's or sony's (if you can afford sony)
swamp
edit: ok got everything outta box. Yes it has quickrestore cd's (3) of em, bummer. Oh well for the price I guess that isn't too bad.

I have no personal experience with Toshiba laptops ( I got the Vaio), but the Toshiba was my second choice. I think his remark may be geared toward their service...maybe...I think. Everyone has made a lemon at some point. I think you got a good deal. The only consistent complaint I've heard about Toshiba was that they were a little hot for the 'lap'. |

I use a Toshiba at work. I haven't had any major problems with it. The only thing I don't like about it is the eraser head mouse. I use a USB mouse instead. |

chiguy it has the touchpad for mouse but it does have the slide out dvd, floppy drive. If you want to use floppy you gotta take out the dvd-rom. I really don't care for that ,but as much as I use floppy anymore I guess it isn't too bad

Toshiba makes nice machines, but according to Consumer Reports Magazine (and most other magazines that deal with this topic) they tend to lack some on reliablility, and the Toshiba service department was also ranked lower than some.
In the magazines I've seen, when they do reports on service and reliablility (not features, ease of use, power, etc.) Dell is always ranked as #1 with IBM and Sony tied for a fairly close #2.
This is for laptops however. Sony desktops unfortunately don't score nearly as high on service and reliability.
Once again, this is ranking only service (how well the company deals with your computer problems) and reliability (how durable your computer is; how soon & how often it has problems).
Chances are, if you're planning to use the laptop only 2 years and then upgrading again to a new one these items won't even come into play.
Currently I think the two main brands to avoid are Compaq and eMachines. Compaq business machines are great, but the consumer machines (Presario line) are crap.
Also, any company will have its lemons as well as its nearly perfect machines.
Good luck with your new "cow"! |

swamp | I see what you mean. I rarely use a floppy anymore. I'm still waiting for the day where computers come with something better than the 1.44 mb floppy drive. |
