Thinkpad problems

I have an older thinkpad (380XD), and it recently began to act funny. I have no battery, so I plugged it in, I turned it on, heard the familiar "WOOSH" of boot up, then all fan/noise activity stops. The Current light works no more, and my drive access light stays on. Also, the current light does work when in this state of discombobuality.

Why? I need this lappy to work for me!

Yeah - not worth it to fix - replacement part is like $100. I can pick a new lappy up off ebay for half that.
